Where will these anti-Trump protests lead?

I’m a little confused as to all the protesting across the USA over the election of Donald Trump for our president. I agree he is racist, misogynist and fascistic, but just how different is he from someone like Richard Nixon? Using protests to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline makes sense because we can really expect to do that.

I’m not against the protests. I’m just wondering where we can take such actions. I would estimate that most of the protesters will wear down and give up trying to change things by January 20. I really doubt if our government will give in and remove Trump. I’ve seen petitions to get rid of the Electoral College and allow Hillary Clinton to be president based on her winning the popular vote. But petitions take time—a lot of time. I can’t imagine such a petition being acted on in just one month, no matter how many people sign it. It would make sense to get rid of the Electoral College, since it is a relic from the 1700s and has no place in a modern government. And that is beside the point that the Electoral College is just plain stupid and unfair. Go ahead and protest if you like—but I don't see the point in it. On the other hand, this is a good time to start action to demolish the Electoral College.

Donald Trump's new cabinet—The Scum rises to the top—Despicable

For those who thought that maybe future Prez. Donald Trump isn't all that far to the right—Think again. Trump's appointments to cabinet positions amount to a 'who's who' of far-far-far to the right scum bags that are now crawling out from under their rocks to poison the political culture of America.
Most of the bad things people accused trump of being are being realized by the despicable people he has chosen.

Stephen Bannon, chief strategist and senior counsellor: OK we can all see that this guy is a Neo-Nazi style far right extremist....so maybe he is just one bad guy....no there is more...
Jeff Sessions, attorney general: This man is a blatant racist—the type we thought we finally got rid of when southern politicians such as George Wallace, and others like him, finally died off. This guy is strait out of the 1950s complete with admiration for the Ku Klux Klan.
Gen. Mike Flynn, national security adviser: a blatant Islamaphobe.
Mike Pompeo,CIA director: Trump seems eager to collect Kansas' garbage politicians and put them on the national sceen. This man is the most pro-war, pro-military, pro-imperialist Republican to come from Kansas. If this country isn't at war soon after he takes control of the CIA, it won't be because he isn't trying. He has cheered when the NSA spied on millions of Americans. He saw no threat to our privacy. He said we need to trust the government.

These people are some of the worst scum that Republican politics can produce. If this is a look at the future Trump administration- Wow! Run for cover.

Another Thanksgiving- more mythological fun

Today, Thanksgiving is seen by many as a "politically incorrect" holiday. The pilgrim forefathers took advantage of the Indians. And some people believe that it is barbaric to plan a holiday over killing a turkey. Still there are my relatives and I probably won't tell them how bad their holiday is, at least not until after we all eat. So I print this so all may know the truth.
There was a “first Thanksgiving” dinner, but not likely turkey or the fixings we see today. The original meat was fish and deer.  The turkey became part of Thanksgiving about 1857. It is supposed to be of foods native to the New World. It became a national holiday in 1941. The traditional fixings came from a women’s magazine in the 1850s.

However, many of us will go to a holiday feast with the intention of celebrating time with our families and/or friends. We are thankful in life for some things. Most of us have either accomplished something of success in our lives or we may like our relatives—spouses—or our friends and lovers. Since I’m an Epicurean and don’t believe in praying to god, I will simply be thankful. I also won’t dump a guilt trip on my relatives for the sins of their ancestors or the fact that they are eating a murdered animal.

Water cannons fired at water protectors, of the protesters of Standing Rock encampments in North Dakota

FREEZING TEMPERATURES INJURE HUNDREDS

This protest has been going on now for several months. It has been largely ignored by the mainstream press. This is probably the  most important protest movement of the last year.
The whole mess demonstrates once again that the Native American Indians, after 250 years of being cheated, lied to and just plain dehumanised through torture and murder— are still being ripped off by the US government today. Corporate interests of Three Forksare clearly more important to our Democrat President in office Barack Obama than Native American Indian rights. Would it be so bad if just once the government treated our Native American Indians with respect, dignity and fairness? That is not what is happening. Our government is taking the sides of Three Forks.
This protests has turned into an outright battle between the Native American Indian Protesters, of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and people across the country who are supportive of their cause.
The following article gives us a look at what is happening there now. -SJ Otto

Cannon Ball, ND-- Hundreds of water protectors were injured at the Standing Rock encampments when law enforcement blasted them with water cannons in freezing temperatures Sunday evening.   The attacks came as water protectors used a semi-truck to remove burnt military vehicles that police had chained to concrete barriers weeks ago, blocking traffic on Highway 1806.  Water protectors’ efforts to clear the road and improve access to the camp for emergency services were met with tear gas, an LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device), stinger grenades, rubber bullets, and indiscriminate use of a water cannon with an air temperature of 26 degrees Fahrenheit. Some flares shot by law enforcement started grass fires which were ignored by the water cannons and had to be extinguished by water protectors. Law enforcement also shot down three media drones and targeted journalists with less lethal rounds.

Also from this site:
Tara Houska, National Campaigns Director for Honor the Earth, says, “For weeks, the main highway to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation has been cut off, with no movement by the state to address a public safety risk. Attempting to clear the road was met with police spraying people with water cannons in 26 degree weather -- that’s deadly force, it’s freezing outside. They want to kill people for clearing a road? When will our cries be heard? Stop the Dakota Access pipeline. Respect the rights of indigenous people, of all peoples.”
LaDonna Allard, Director of the Sacred Stone Camp, says, “All I can say is why? We are asking for clean water, we are asking for the right to live, we are asking for our children to live. Instead they attack us, because they protect oil. Morton county and DAPL security are inhuman- what is wrong with their hearts?”
Dallas Goldtooth, Indigenous Environmental Network, says, “It is below freezing right now and the Morton County Sheriff’s Department is using a water cannon on our people, that is an excessive and potentially deadly use of force. Tribal EMS are stepping up and providing services that should be the responsibility of MortonCounty, this is ridiculous. Because of the police enforced road block, ambulances now have an extra 30 minutes to get to the hospital. Those are life and death numbers right there, and MortonCounty and the State of North Dakota will be responsible for the tally.”
The Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council released this statement: “The physicians and tribal healers with the Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council call for the immediate cessation of use of water cannons on people who are outdoors in 28F ambient weather with no means of active rewarming in these conditions. As medical professionals, we are concerned for the real risk of loss of life due to severe hypothermia under these conditions.”

Black Friday—and buying lots and lots and lots of crap!

We stand on the edge of time for another Black Friday, a corporate consumer holiday designed to send the bold and adventurous, in the early morning hours of the day, to try and buy cheap stuff. Yeas cheap is the word. They want all their stuff to be bought cheap, but at a pace that brings them huge profits.
The corporate captains of our day have changed the story of a little baby in the manger into a crass orgy of consumerism and greed. From Thanksgiving until Christmas day, that important holy day for Christians around the globe, capitalist corporate pirates will be trying to entice people into buying various products for themselves and as presents to their friends, relatives and children.
As a child, I understand the joy of getting new toys on Christmas day. But as I get older I realize that trying to fulfil my needs, wants and desires from this season are mostly good for the capitalists who make all the money providing these things.  And let's  be serious folks. A lot of what we are enticed to buy is useless crap that most people don't need. And there are always those items we think we will enjoy but they become forgotten so quickly.
I'm not a Christian. I do like the holidays but as an Epicurean. I celebrate Winter Solstice rather than Christmas. That is a holiday that allows the same traditions. (they were taken from early Pagans by the early Christian Church.)  But I avoid buying a lot of crap from name brand stores.
I don't buy many gifts and the ones I do buy I try to get from small local businesses- not large corporations like Wal*Mart.

So for me on Black Friday...I'm home relaxing and drinking a beer.

It is time to seriously get rid of the Electoral College

$

Across the country people have been trying to reverse the election of Donald Trump to office. One way of doing this isan attempt to end the Electoral Collage. That would allow the election of Hillary Clinton since she had the most popular votes.
The idea of reversing Trump's is a waist of time. He won. We are stuck with him for now. There is no way to reverse this.
But the other idea of getting rid of the Electoral Collage is a good one and should be pursuited. A lot of people want to get rid of the Electoral Collage on both the left and the right. At present there is a petition drive to get this action going. It should continue.

The Electoral College is a relic of the American Revolution. Our forefathers thought people were not smart enough to vote directly for president. So instead the people can vote for an electorate who will then vote for the president. This is about the only western style democracy that uses such a system. In modern times leaders are directly elected by the people. Many countries have a proportional representation system that allows political parties to get seats in their congressional bodies according to the votes they get. In such a system the party with the most votes choice the leader. Some have to form coalitions to get a majority to pick the leader or there may be a run off election if neither party gets the majority of votes. Proportional representation is a lot more democratic than a two-party system. The USis one of the few countries that will allow for a president to win with a minority of the votes, as happened in this last election.
Many people I know have known recently have tried to work on electing 3rd parties, such as the Greens. Because of the Electoral Collage, it is basically impossible to elect someone outside of our two-party system. To seriously try to elect these other candidates from other parties is a waist of time. They only purpose they serve is for protest votes. That is to vote for someone who can't win rather than vote for the two choices given. For those people who really want to elect a third party it is time to work to abolish the Electoral Collage. That abolitions is absolutely necessary before we can seriously try to build a 3rd party.

It will take time. It is not easy to change the constitution. But such changes do happen in this country. We need to change the constitution as soon as we can. We need real elections not the phoney ones we are getting with the Electoral Collage.

The so called "experts" want to finish off the Democratic Party

$

Now that the Democratic Party has been voted out of nearly every part of the country, members are getting advice from every corner of the country. For example:
According to  MARK LILLA of The New York Times:

One of the many lessons of the recent presidential election campaign and its repugnant outcome is that the age of identity liberalism must be brought to an end. Hillary Clinton was at her best and most uplifting when she spoke about American interests in world affairs and how they relate to our understanding of democracy. But when it came to life at home, she tended on the campaign trail to lose that large vision and slip into the rhetoric of diversity, calling out explicitly to African-American, Latino, L.G.B.T. and women voters at every stop. This was a strategic mistake. If you are going to mention groups in America, you had better mention all of them. If you don’t, those left out will notice and feel excluded. Which, as the data show, was exactly what happened with the white working class and those with strong religious convictions. Fully two-thirds of white voters without college degrees voted for Donald Trump, as did over 80 percent of white evangelicals.

Most of the advice is likely to be like this. Jettison all liberalism. Get rid of the politics of minorities, Blacks, Latinos, women, gays, and go for those so called Reagan Democrats—those Archie Bunkers of America, those conservative and some-what bigoted white working people. Win them back from the Republicans and we can win elections.
Every time the Democrats lose an election they move to the political middle—or they move to the right. There really are no liberal Democrats left in politics and haven't been since Ted Kennedy and George McGovern. Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are centrists. They are not liberal or left at all. Hillary was clearly a centrist and at times as conservative as Trump. But did she lose because she was too liberal?
Just look at the Democratic Primary. She nearly got beat by Bernie Sanders, a socialist. He brought out young people in droves to vote for him. He won in such conservative states as Kansas. He is not right-wing or centrist. It is not a surprise that many of the young people who voted for Bernie Sanders refused to go out and vote for Clinton. I know of many who voted for the Greens rather that Clintonor just didn't vote at all.
Thomas Frank, author of "Listen, Liberal," said of Hillary Clinton:

She was the Democratic candidate because it was her turn and because a Clinton victory would have moved every Democrat in Washingtonup a notch. Whether or not she would win was always a secondary matter, something that was taken for granted. Had winning been the party’s number one concern, several more suitable candidates were ready to go. There was Joe Biden, with his powerful plainspoken style, and there was Bernie Sanders, an inspiring and largely scandal-free figure. Each of them would probably have beaten Trump, but neither of them would really have served the interests of the party insiders.
And so Democratic leaders made Hillary their candidate even though they knew about her closeness to the banks, her fondness for war, and her unique vulnerability on the trade issue – each of which Trump exploited to the fullest. They chose Hillary even though they knew about her private email server. They chose her even though some of those who studied the Clinton Foundation suspected it was a sketchy proposition.
To try to put over such a nominee while screaming that the Republican is a rightwing monster is to court disbelief. If Trump is a fascist, as liberals often said, Democrats should have put in their strongest player to stop him, not a party hack they’d chosen because it was her turn. Choosing her indicated either that Democrats didn’t mean what they said about Trump’s riskiness, that their opportunism took precedence over the country’s well-being, or maybe both.

So the Democratic Party went for a traditional candidate who they felt they owed the spot on the ballot. They could have been more supportive of Sanders, but he wasn't a party hack or insider. That is a major reason Clinton lost.
It is unfortunate that lesser heads are bound to prevail. The Democratic Party keeps moving to the right and keeps imitating the Republicans hoping they can hi-jack the ultra-right message without losing their liberal base in so called identity politics. To jettison that base will prove dangerous. They will have to win back enough redneck white guys to make up for the loss of blacks and gays. Or they may just not mention identity politics and hope that those people will just assume that the Democrats are their natural allies. They have had that attitude in the past. It is the idea: "What are you going to do? Vote Republican!" But that attitude may wear thin if the Democrats keep moving to the right. There are a lot of young people  who are uninterested in right-wing bigoted politics. They want someone to vote for. They will not vote of Democrats who will offer up more of what they are sick of. They Democrats can get a clue or continue to slide into irrelevancy. One thing they should not do is listen to the crop of so called "experts."

A few thoughts about Fidel Castro, who just died

By SJ Otto

I was raised in an anti-communist household so when I first heard of Fidel Castro, he was described as a dictator. "He was against freedom and democracy. He had taken over Cubaand ruined it," or so I was told. Well, I changed over time.

My views of Castro changed over the years. In the 1970s I believed that Castro was a pro-Soviet stooge. I saw him, as others I knew saw him, as a part of the Soviet Empire. And to be honest he was a dictator and not all that found of freedom or democracy. His newspaper, Grandma, often said "this is not a place for liberals." It was a place for Marxists and Marxists only.
But by the 1970s I realized he wasn't all bad. He supported Salvador Allende, the Marxist president who won an election in Chile. It seemed ironic that Allende followed all the rules of the democracy he came to power in. He never abused power. He was a benevolent ruler. And yet he and Castro were good friends while the Richard Nixon administration tried everything they could to get rid of Allende.
Years later he supported the Sandinista Revolution. That new government also respected democracy, a free press (with a little censorship) and other freedoms. Once again our own president, Ronald Reagan, did everything he could to bring the Sandinistas down. Eventually they got voted out of office, but Fidel and his party still reigned in Cuba.
For all the other parties, politicians and guerrilla groups in Latin America, the Cuban revolution has stood alone. Some left-wing governments came and went, but Castro and his Islandremained.
Even after the fall of the Soviet Union, Castro and his party defied all odds to keep Cubaa Marxist regime. Today, it still is. There is no telling how much longer Marxism will survive in its one last stronghold. But it is 2016 and the Cuban revolution is still there.
After the Soviet Union fell, I gained a lot of respect for Castro. Leaders in other Soviet Block countries scrambled to find favour with the west. But Castro stood his ground. For that I gained a lot of respect for him.

Castro is one of the last of the old cold warriors of the 20th century. He has outlived John Kennedy, Nixon, Reagan, Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev. There may never be another Fidel Castro. He deserves to be remembered for the good he did, as well as his faults.

Stop Donald Trump's conflicts of interest

Last week Donald Trump told the New York Times "the president can't
have a conflict of interest."
Ringing in my ears was Richard Nixon telling journalist David Frost "when the president does it, that means it is not illegal."
Nearly every president in modern times has set up a "blind trust" to
avoid financial conflicts of interest. Trump's proposed solution is to put his children in charge of his company -- not even close to the same thing. Especially when he is inviting these children to sit in on meeting with foreign leaders. Already we've seen Trump argue for policies that could enrich him, like opposing offshore wind farms in Scotland that might disrupt the view of his golf course -- among many others.
The New York Times interview, and his own tweets, show that persistent questioning about his financial conflicts of interest are causing Trump to become defensive about them. Good. He should be.

Peace and Social Justice Center's Annual Dinner—Maxine Phillips on immigration under Trump and the growth of DSA

How will President Elect Donald Trump affect the issues of immigration and how will we (activists) react to him—these questions that were raised by Maxine Phillips, former editor of Dissent Magazine, and presently Executive Director of Democratic Socialist of America (DSA), at the Peace and Social Justice Center's Annual Dinner, Friday Night, in Wichita, KS. Phillips also writes a blog, Religious Socialism. Phillips was the main speaker that night.
At least 60 people were present at this year's Annual Dinner. There were so many people trying to attend the event that some had to be turned down for the dinner part. They just didn't have enough room or food.
"We are doing better in Kansasthan Nation wide," said Janice Bradley, Peace and Social JusticeCenterboard member. "That is especially with the Bernie campaign."
She pointed out that in Kansas Bernie Sanders won the Democratic primary by a comfortable margin.
Then Phillips spoke. She said; "The promise of:

'Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,'[1]

expired long ago, but the dream lives on."
Much of her talk focused on the various problems of immigrants and a history of the problems they faced in the past.
"Some of us were brought here against our will, through slavery," she said. "Other's came here escaping war or repression."
She pointed out that many early American people of European decent wanted to keep out other Europeans.
"Ben Franklin said 'Why would we want Germans here," Phillips pointed out.
She added there were those who described the Irish as wild and turbulent. There was a backlash against the Irish in the Gilded Age.
Phillips also spoke of modern acts that have caused fear among immigrants such as the US Congress passing the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) or INS Special Registration, shortly after September 11, 2001. The act required of males over the age of sixteen who entered the United States legally on particular types of visa (primarily student, work, and tourist) from certain countries to resister, so the government could track potential terrorists. Some people had so much trouble with this act they had to leave and went to Canada. They found they couldn't even come back for a visit.
"Obama took 25 countries off that list," Phillips said. "But the law is still there. I thought of a thousand children and adults who had to fear that law."
She pointed out that Trump could easily put that law back into action. Phillips also speculated as to the affects of our new President Trump on our national politics.
"Today the ruling party controls all branches of government, president, congress and soon the Supreme Court," she added.
She talked about bigots across the country suddenly feeling empowered. She said that bigotry is being globalized as fascists and Trump-like-minded people are being elected all over Europe.
" First thing is to say "no" to normalizing this hatred and false hoods," Phillips insisted.
Phillips also talked about here activities in DSA.
"All of us are involved in some kind of struggle," she told the audience. "We are at a turning point.  There is the Standing Rock encampment, Black Lives Matter and the issue of fracking and earthquakes here in Kansas."
She also said 3,000 people have joined DSA since the Bernie Sanders campaign.
"Sanders normalized the label "socialist," Phillips said.
She also discussed the issue of "sanctuary cities"that are trying to aid and defend immigrants from being mistreated or sent back where they came from for frivolous reasons. She warned that President Trump may not recognize those sanctuary designations and he may just ignore them.
Phillips was eagerly received by the audience and there were many worthwhile questions asked after her speech.
She closed with the quote; "when change comes- where are you- where will you be."

Maxine Phillips also took part in a DSA workshop on Saturday.

I’m celebrating the holidays this year—Winter Solstice

$

By SJ Otto
It is almost December 25, Christmas in this country, and as much as I love this festive season, I have to put up with those who have deemed themselves holy crusaders to keep Atheists and similar views out of the holiday season.
Some time ago people here realized that Jews don’t celebrate Christmas so some people began trying to include Chanukah in these holidays. In some cities as in New York there are a lot of Jews. There are menorahs and many people say “happy Chanukah.”
A few years ago I studied Druidry and after a couple of years of hanging out with other pagans, I decided to go back to a more humanist approach to spirituality and I adapted the doctrines of Epicurus. Epicurus did not deny the existence of god(s) but decided that gods take care of gods and humans need to take care of themselves. He also told people we should learn not to blame everything on gods. ‘If your house is crushed by an earthquake it isn’t the anger of the gods, you built your house in an earthquake prone place.’ And he didn’t believe in an after-life.
But I still like the fall holidays, so I still celebrate Samhain or Halloween and Christmas which I call Winter Solstice. The solstice was actually the December holiday that was taken over by the early Christians. Many of the old symbols are still used—such as putting a tree in the house and decorating it.
I’m sure many atheists celebrate these holidays as well. So why then do some Christians get so angry if non-Christians want to celebrate this holiday? Why the blatant hatred against all of us by conservative Christians?
An example of this hate is an article in the Huff Post where the president of a Kentucky creationist museum told Fox News that Christmas was a “time to take on the atheists” who used their free speech rights to doubt the existence of God;
“Well, it wouldn’t be Christmas without someone complaining about Christ,” Fox & Friends host Elisabeth Hasselbeck told Creation Museum President Ken Ham, noting that atheists had put up a billboard in Time Square which suggested that Christ was not needed during Christmas.

“You know, the atheist who are a very small minority in the population have been trying to impose their religion of atheism on the culture now for quite a while,” Ham explained. “You know, getting Bible, prayer out of schools. Christian symbols out of public places.”

And the most infuriating statement from this person was;

“I mean, what’s the atheists’ message? There is no God? When you die that’s the end of you? So everything’s just meaningless and hopelessness?”

Why is it that if we don’t believe in god and a religion that focuses on god being more important than anything else we are “meaningless and hopeless?”
I believe that people come first, not gods and not the afterlife. Why then are people like me accused of trying to put doubt about god in people?’ Don’t these Christians have enough faith in their own beliefs that they can stand it when some says “I don’t believe that?”
It is obvious that Ham does not really know what atheists believe, because he has raised the question ‘what do they believe in?’ I notice he didn’t bother to ask an atheist, he just assumed.
Again Hamm from Fox said;

“The atheists are only a small part of the population. And really, it’s that minority, less than 2 percent of the population, that seem to be having such say in our culture, in imposing their anti-God religion.”

I’m not trying to promote anything—I’m trying to celebrate some holidays. I’m part of the culture of this country whether others likes it or not. No one can erase non-Christians and atheist from this country.

Have a Happy Winter Solstice!—Or whatever holiday you want to celebrate!

Sec. John Kerry says Donald Trump did not contact State Dept. before making calls to world leaders

Donald Trump has been on a dangerous, bumbling tour of calls and visits with world leaders—and he hasn’t even taken office yet. From praising Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte’s vicious anti-drug campaign, which the Los Angeles Times has described as a "bloodbath that has killed 5,000 people” to going on an unprovoked, unnecessary and downright dangerous Twitter rant against trade deals with China and their controversial military bases in the South China Sea.
As if that weren’t a rocky enough start to the Trump era, Secretary of State John Kerry confirmed Trump and his team did not seek consult with the State Department:
Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday he's trying to stay "a thousand miles away from the (Donald) Trump transition process" while acknowledging neither the President-elect nor his transition team have consulted with the State Department prior to Trump's calls with foreign leaders.

Review—Memoirs of a Drugged-Up, Sex-Crazed Yippie

Review—

Kansas in the late 1970's was so different from today; the Sunflower State might as well have been located in Holland.

Remember what it was like to share drugs with close friends and complete strangers? Remember when casual sex was so casual you didn't even know your partners name? Remember when the political climate of Kansas came down squarely on the side of tolerance? Remember when your personal philosophy of life was defined by rock lyrics and not a mission statement?

You don't?

Well, Steve Otto does.

In his latest semi-fictional novel, Memoirs Of A Drugged-Up, Sex Crazed Yippie (Authorhouse Press/2005), Otto excavates 1970's counterculture like an archeologist loving dusting off a Mastodon tusk. In a brisk 349 pages, Otto gives us a lucid look at a Kansas few people remember --- or can't remember due to a plentiful supply of "controlled substances" that were constantly and cheaply available. Characters romp through Wichita, Lawrence and even Sedalia Missouri when a cheap thrill was worth what you paid for it and pleasure was just the flipside of danger.

But to dismiss this book as just another nostalgic stoner reminiscing about the last days of the counter-culture would be a major mistake. Although there is a certain "back-in-the-day" wistfulness about the time before political correctness was a mantra, Otto tempers his dreamy history lesson with brutal honesty.

The narrator of the story --- a composite of just about every old druggie you ever met --- may graphically describe the bliss of mainlining MDA, he also reminds us that brief moment of pleasure most often occurred in a squalid apartment at broken kitchen table next to sink full of dirty dishes.

Like all good storytellers, Otto takes the reader places they've never been before. Like William Burroughs and Charles Bukowsky, Otto sometimes takes you to places you've never really wanted to visit. Yet, Otto makes it worth the trip by including generous portions of political discourse, Cyrenaic philosophy, post-adolescent lust and near-suicidal thrill seeking to keep the narrative moving along like a junkie careening through a police roadblock.

Otto's work is always provocative and this book will undoubtedly draw the wrath of both solid conservatives and neo-feminists. Otto's characters never mask their contempt for the right-wing agenda and Otto's narrator never hides his obsession with female anatomy. However, criticizing Memoirs because it baits conservatives and objectifies women is missing the point. Filtering 1970's Kansas counterculture through the sensibilities of a naive middle-class, catholic school educated, twenty-something is no easy trick but Otto mostly pulls it off. He has a good ear for times-past and tries --- often successfully --- to make his prose read like it would have been written by someone experiencing these situations 30 years ago. Trying to be simultaneously innovative, entertaining and honest is a juggling act on a unicycle, but Otto is generally at his best when everything's up-in-the-air and he's peddling frantically. When the narrator's budding Marxist politics and his discussions with Iranian nationalists clash with his dawning awareness that Kansas politics has taken a sharp turn to the right, Otto makes it work.

Is Otto's look into the rear-view mirror a true reflection on the 70's, or do the objects simply appear bigger than they were? Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Memoirs resonates with characters buckling under the weight of the America Dream with redemption harder to find than next snort of Cocaine.

From NOW President Terry O'Neill:

December 7, 2016
Washington, DC - The National Organization for Women proudly endorses the Women’s March on Washington. On January 21, 2017, we will join with activists from across the country in a historic and necessary affirmation that women’s rights are human rights. There is no better place for us to deliver this message than Washington, D.C. on the first day of the new administration.
Dedicated to intersectional grassroots organizing to lead societal change, NOW stands in unwavering solidarity with our sisters whose communities have been insulted, demonized and threatened in recent months, including communities of color, LGBTQIA people, those with diverse religious faiths particularly Muslims, people with disabilities, economically impoverished people, survivors of sexual assault, and those who seek–and the caring professionals who provide–safe, affordable abortion care and birth control.
NOW’s activists and leaders will be on the front lines with our sisters in the struggle, supporting their leadership We will not trade away the rights of one group of women for the advancement of another. We unite with all women who seek freedom and self-determination, and join hands with all of the great movements seeking equity, parity, empowerment, and justice. We will not submit, nor will we be intimidated. But we will keep moving forward.
Our task ahead will be difficult and often painful. But the Women’s March will set the tone for a new upwelling of grassroots activism, advocacy, and resistance. Women will never go back. Together, we will fight back!

Entertainer, author and beloved NPR radio personality Garrison Keillor has had plenty to say about Donald Trump during and after Election Day. On November 10, an article about Keillor’s Washington Post op-ed went viral. Keillor wrote — with disgust:
“Raw ego and proud illiteracy have won out, and a severely learning-disabled man with a real character problem will be president.”

He added:
“Alas for the Trump voters, the disasters he will bring on this country will fall more heavily on them than anyone else. The uneducated white males who elected him are the vulnerable ones, and they will not like what happens next.”

It is good and important to see that the Wichita State University Student newspaper, The Sunflower is calling the School administration on the influence of the Koch brothers, Charles and David. This makes a good follow-up to an earlier story we did (Koch brothers helped create a “culture of fear” at Wichita State University). – SJ Otto

From the W.S.U. The Sunflower Student Newspaper:

Donations to universities by the Charles Koch Foundation sometimes come with strings attached. But university officials said a proposed Koch-funded “Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise” in the Barton School of Business won’t jeopardize academic freedom at Wichita State.
Talks about the institute leaked last month in The Wichita Eagle and the university had not officially confirmed the report until last week, when Koch influence was the first topic addressed at the Faculty Senate meeting.
According to emails and documents provided to The Sunflower by an anonymous source in July, Anand Desai, dean of the Barton School, had been in contact with Brett Hinkley about creating the institute at WSU.
In a leaked document from 2014, Mother Jones identified Hinkley as a “player” for Freedom Partners — formerly known as the Association for American Innovation — which is a Koch-funded nonprofit organization that has given grants worth $236 million to conservative political organizations.
