We all enjoyed our favorite beverages and snacks.

Ocasio-Cortez upset should be a wake up call—yet probably just a snooze fest for the establishment Democrats

By SJ Otto
The latest Democratic upset—Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beating long-time mainstream Democrat Joseph Crowley of New York, should be a wake-up call to the mainstream Democratic Party leadership—"your strategy for winning elections is not working. Try something different!"
Actually the Democrat's strategy has been losing elections for years. And yet the leadership of the Democratic Party has not given up on it yet.
Ocasio-Cortez was a former organizer for Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign. A number of politicians from the Bernie Sanders campaign last year, have formed a serious challenge to the DNC leadership of the Democrats. The DNC strategy is always the same. They raise as much money as they can, they stay as close to the middle of the political spectrum as they can and they avoid saying anything that will offend a voter. It simply hasn't worked. Democrats have lost many elections here in Kansasand they just won't give that strategy up. Ocasio-Cortez is a member of Democratic Socialists of America and she ran a campaign that made her left leaning politics in plain site. And she won.
According to The New York Times; Ocasio-Cortez:

"had declared it was time for generational, racial and ideological change."

Also:

"Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is a native of the Bronx and a Latina in a Queens and Bronxdistrict that is majority-minority, a fact she emphasized repeatedly on the trail against Mr. Crowley, who is white. In hindsight, the seat represented perhaps a perfect brew for an upset: a rusty incumbent, a charismatic challenger and a liberal district that gave Mr. Sanders more than 41 percent of the vote against Hillary Clinton."

Not all the politicians who have taken support and backing of Sanders are committed socialists. But all of his supporters are challenging the mainstream corporatist wing of the Democratic Party. For example James Thompson is running a campaign to oust House of Representative Ron Estes, the Republican. He won't use the "S" word (Socialism. He said he thinks most people in Kansasdon't like that word). He got nearly no support in his last campaign from the main-stream establishment Democratic Party here in Kansas. He is being challenged by Laura Lombard, who will probably get the support of the more traditional Democrats. But so far Thompson has raised his own money and has a committed staff of supporters that have put him out front for the Democratic Primary, August 7. He came close to unseating Estes, in the last election. Estes made little effort to meet the people in his 4th district. All he did was run some negative and misleading adds that the establishment Republicans paid for. He just figured he'd win because he was a Republican running in a mostly Republican district. He almost lost and there is a strong possibility he will lose out to Thompson this fall. Again from The New York Times:

“What I see is that the Democratic Party takes working class communities for granted, they take people of color for granted and they just assume that we’re going to turn out no matter how bland or half-stepping these proposals are,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said in a recent interview about why she was running."

Her remarks strike a cord with voters all across the country, especially young voters, who unlike previous generations, are turning out to vote in large numbers. The old stale establishment Democrats should be noticing that their lock on power is slipping away badly. Again:

"Ms. Ocasio-Cortez had used Mr. Crowley’s role in the leadership, and the fact that he was the head of the local Democratic Party machine, against him in her bid to upend the existing political class. She will face Anthony Pappas, the Republican candidate, in the November general election....
....Mr. Crowley is the first House Democrat in the nation to lose a primary in 2018. His loss is most significant for a congressional incumbent since Eric Cantor, then the No. 2 Republican in the House, was defeated in 2014 to a Tea Party activist, David Brat."

Last December I posted an article on the Democratic Party and their timid plans to do the same thing the party has done over the last 20 years and all of it was wrong. As Miles Kampf-Lassin, of In These Times wrote:

"There’s no shortage of ambitious programs waiting for the Democrats to embrace.
The story of the Democratic Party in 2017 has been one of timidity and stubborn resistance to real change.
In the immediate aftermath of the party’s preferred candidate facing a humiliating defeat in last year’s presidential election, questions swirled over what direction the party would take to respond to the new political reality. With Democrats at their weakest position in decades, having lost over 1,000 seats in states and Congress over the previous eight years, it appeared that a drastic shift in how the party operated was in store.
And the party was offered an early opportunity to embark on such a shift, with the campaign by Keith Ellison for Democratic National Committee chair. Ellison sported a resume as a bold progressive with popular support from rank-and-file Democrats and party activists alike. And he presented a clear break with the Democratic Party’s traditional establishment.
But rather than embrace the new direction presented by Ellison’s bid, party insiders conspired to instead elect Tom Perez, a candidate with much stronger connections to the party’s establishment wing. The result came as a dispiriting blow to many in the party’s base who hoped for a clear break in Democratic leadership."

It seems unlikely that the Democratic Party will learn anything from this humiliating defeat. They could change directions and start to embrace issues and seriously challenge President Donald Trump and the Republicans. I'm not holding my breath. The only hope for the Democratic Party are the new challengers, such Ocasio-Cortez, who represent a new bolder and liberal, left or democratic socialists who may have the nerve it takes to tell American public what these candidates really stand for. The mainstream Democrats are likely to just follow the same old lame, tired, bland strategy that has lost the Democrats election after election. With these new socialists running, there is a chance that the voters will finally have a real choice in these Fall elections.

Thoughts and feelings over the US Fourth of July celebration- 2018

$

By SJ Otto
In just a few days it will be Fourth of July for 2018. Each year I write an article about the Fourth of July and what I really think this holiday means. I analyse the US Revolution/Revolutionary War and the changes it brought. From here down, I am posting what I posted last year. Not much has changed, if anything, from last year:

That is a holiday I have mixed feelings about. No doubt that there will be plenty of jingoistic TV shows and commercials on TV. There will also be radio spots promoting all the wrong things about this holiday. It was a great revolution for its time. The United States was created out of a change, based in part on the anti-feudalistic political movements in Europe and anti-colonialism in the Americas. A small group of colonies of the United Kingdom decided it was time for their own independent country. So they kicked the British out. They got rid of any form of feudal aristocracy. It all seemed good at the time. And let's not forget that this revolution was strictly for the benefit of white people of European decent. Black slaves and Native American Indians were not invited to this new world government.

Here are some of my fireworks for two days from now, including firecrackers, mortars and rockets.

But then we come to the United States in 2017. We have no formal aristocrats, but we
have them informally. Such individuals as Charles and David Koch, Robert Mercer and even out own president, Donald Trump, have huge incomes and promote politics, in the Republican Party, that entitles them to the kind of wealth and power only kings, queens and other royalty are known for having. They have no formal titles, but they have so much power and wealth they don't need them.
For a country that fought off colonialism we are the most imperialistic force in the world today. We are the only country that presently occupies two nations, Iraq and Afghanistan. While we originally fought a colonial power, today we ARE a major colonial power.
If there is one thing I do like about this holiday it is the fireworks. Along with plenty of beer, grilled meat and a chance to hang out with my friends and relatives, who could ask for a better holiday? But there are those who do.
There are those who really hate this holiday and for good reasons. This is a modern capitalist country and we need a socialist movement to push it in the direction of democracy for the masses, not just the rich classes who now strangle us with all kinds of privileges for them and fewer rights and resources for the rest of us. We need a foreign policy that ends our imperialism. We need to end the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. We need an end to the War on Terrorism.
But still, I like the fireworks. I like spending time with my friends and family. I like drinking beer. And there was this revolution at one time and it was not such a bad event. So I will continue to celebrate the Fourth of July, this year and any years to come.

For some background on our founding fathers and their role in our revolution, here is last years summery:

While I am a leftist, that doesn't mean I don't like or admire some of our founding fathers. I like to remind people that there are both good and bad things about the US revolution. We are talking about a revolution that concluded with the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies were to become an independent nation.
Of our founding fathers, the Republicans (anti-aristocrats at that time) included both Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson. They differed from George Hamilton and his Federalists who wanted to create some new kind of aristocracy.  In his later writings, Paincondemned the Federalists for trying to reverse the US revolution and what it stood for.

"What To The Slave Is The 4th Of July?"

FREDERICK DOUGLASS SPEECH, 1852

This is a Fourth of July classic. I like posting this almost every Fourth of July. It gives us time to think about our country for real. -SJ Otto

The Freeman Institute Foundation -- Developing Black History galleries designed to
educate and inspire young people in selected cities internationally (collection).

Fellow citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here today? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? and am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits and express devout gratitude for the blessings resulting from your independence to us?

Would to God, both for your sakes and ours, that an affirmative answer could be truthfullyreturned to these questions! Then would my task be light, and my burden easy and delightful. For who is there so cold that a nation's sympathy could not warm him? Who so obdurate and dead to the claims of gratitude that would not thankfully acknowledge such priceless benefits? Who so stolid and selfish that would not give his voice to swell the hallelujahs of a nation's jubilee, when the chains of servitude had been torn from his limbs? I am not that man. In a case like that the dumb might eloquently speak and the "lame man leap as an hart."

Pain patients overlooked in opioid hype campaign—we told you so!!

$

By SJ Otto
When this opioid campaign began I noticed a clear and sharp problem arising in that people with real pain were going to suffer as the opioid "crisis" led to public hysteria and government overreach. (See: Those in pain did not create any “opioid epidemic”).
I have a friend who has cancer and he is having a hard time finding a doctor who will prescribe needed pain killers. He is in the final stages of lung cancer and doctors are telling him "they are going to faze out opioid drugs." He has a morphine pain pump that no doctor will refill. He has had a prescription for methadone. But now he can't get any doctor to treat him. He has been going through withdrawals for days.
Now USA Today has posted an article: "Chronic pain patients, overlooked in opioid crisis, getting new attention from top at FDA," by Jayne O'Donnell and Josephine Chu. It turns out that there are many pain patience, just as my friend, who are having trouble getting treatment for pain. According to that article:

Chronic pain patients and the groups that represent them say the escalating government response to opioid addiction ignores their need for the painkillers and doctors who will prescribe them, leaving some out of work, bedridden and even suicidal.

I also have posted article in which I was sceptical that all the reported overdoses were not really from people being prescribed medical opioids. (See The opioid epidemic is really a fentanyl epidemic—and we don’t need all the hype). It turns out I was right:

CDC researchers said in an article in April in the American Journal of Public Health that they overestimated the number of Americans who have died of prescription opioid overdoses. Because of inaccurate tracking methods, the CDC said it incorrectly counted many overdoses from illicitly manufactured synthetic opioids such as fentanyl as prescription drug deaths.

The above statement is exactly what I wrote in an article earlier this year. This is not much different from the crack epidemic, in which the police gave young Afro-Americans ridiculously long prison sentences for selling what amounted to smokable cocaine. It was no different than regular cocaine except it can be smoked.
The mainstream news media should no better than to let these campaigns get out of control, but they just don't learn. So much of the "opioid epidemic" is nothing more than fake news.

ICE Protest here in Wichita, KS

There has been an occupy movement, Occupy ICE ICT, here in Wichita against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, (ICE) center at 555 N. Woodlawn, here in Wichita, KS. Protesters have had a presence at the ICE building at Woodlawn and Central all week. Yesterday about 93 people attended the rally, starting at the corner of Central and Woodlawn and meeting at the ICE building. The occupation began as a response to President Donald Trump's actions that led to separated families.
"We are responding to questions and concerns," said Dennis Romero who MCed the rally. He, along with others present, want to know what the function of that building is. "We need to make transparency real."
" They are arresting people right here in Wichita," Romero said.
The group is demanding that the ICE facility be inspected by a select group of elected officials.
Of those officials, Democratic state Rep. Gail Finney and Democratic state Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau came to address the crowd. Missing was Ron Estes, our Republican 4rth district Representative who rarely goes to any event where he can address the people he supposedly represents.
"Where's Ron," the crowd chanted at one point.
Some at the rally did go into the building, as far as they were able to. There were no ICE workers present to explain anything to the protesters.

Many Wichitans think a good college education is for the sissies

$

By SJ Otto
Once again we see backward and conservative views from people in Wichita. The latest, from The Wichita Eagle, is that people in Wichita don't value higher education. It is not hard to see that lacking a higher education, many people will fall for the foolish beliefs of the conservatives.
Conservative values include hating unions, supporting the Republican Party, when many people are actually working class, paying higher taxes by the lower classes to support tax beaks for the wealthy and being denied healthcare. They work hard for a living only to be more than willing to give up all their rights to business people who treat them like stupid children. According to The Wichita Eagle:

"I have yet to meet a wealthy individual who has any other expectation for their child other than ... going to college," said Canada, an education activist and former director of the Harlem Children's Zone." I've yet to see anyone with money who said, 'You know what? I've got three kids: You'll go to the University of Kansas. And you, I think I'm gonna send you to Notre Dame. But you ... I'm thinking hairdresser school.' Never heard of it."
In the view of most middle- and upper-class families in America, Canada says, the path to success and a happy life goes straight through college. Graduate from high school, and there's just one question: Have you bought your dorm-room fridge yet?....
..... But that isn't the pervading thought in Wichita.
In a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, Americans were asked: "Would you say a college education is extremely important, very important, somewhat important or not too important in helping a young person succeed in the world today?"
Nationwide, about 77 percent of respondents said college is extremely or very important.
In Wichita, 54 percent said so."

So in Wichita we continue to have half-witted politicians who say really dumb things and then get elected. We have a lazy goof-off Republican in the 4rth congressional district who did absolutely nothing to get elected, in a special election, except to sit back on his fat rump and run misleading ads, paid for by his party. He avoided personal appearances, even being late to his own victory party, while his opponent, James Thompson, worked around the clock to get to know the people of the district. Many people voted for Estes only because he was a Republican. He was the weak candidate, but he won.
Other idiots that have won positions they should have lost include Sedgwick County Commissioner Richard Ranzau, a bigot who was so mean spirited he sent back a government grant to help people on the WIC program because some of them might go to Latino immigrants. He showed an outright biased towards Latinos. And he is still on the county commission.
So we have to wonder how such lousy and creepy politicians keep getting elected. It is simple: Many people in Wichita believe ignorance is a blessing.
People forget that a college education is more than just getting a career. Again in The Wichita Eagle:

"Kristina Everingham, a family and community engagement specialist at Child Start, said too many people have lost sight of the real value of college, which goes beyond income or status.
"College for me was never only about getting a career," she said. "It was about building critical thinking skills, understanding how to hold public discourse when people disagree, how to appreciate great literature and art ... how to make sure I do my part to be a well-rounded and informed citizen."

And there is the ridiculous statement made by Wichita State University President John Bardo:

"Whatever the case, Wichita sits in the heart of a deep red state, and even local university leaders seem to have gotten the message. During a meeting this spring, Wichita State University president John Bardo told members of the unclassified professional senate that creating "an elite little liberal arts college" at WSU "ain't gonna work."

When people embrace ignorance as a virtue, this state and city will get what it deserves. And that is not a good thing. All of us pay for these mistakes.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders and James Thompson at Century II tomorrow

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a congressional candidate from New York, a Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) member, who recently unseated the centrist incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, will be here in Wichita tomorrow. Also with her will be Bernie Sanders and 4th District Congressional candidate James Thompson.
Sanders may run for president again in the next Democratic presidential primary.
Sanders has become a real powerful person within the Democratic Party. He has been trying to move the party left and he may be succeeding. While Thompson does not call himself a socialist, he has been supported by Sanders.
Said Sanders:

"I think if you read the platform right now, you will understand that the political revolution is alive and kicking,"Sanders’s policy director, Warren Gunnels, told NBC News at the time, adding that campaign got "at least 80 percent" of what it wanted.

This event is planned for at 1pm tomorrow at Century II.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders come to Wichita to support James Thomson

By SJ Otto
It was a great day in Kansas for those of us who came to see Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders. But off course they came to back up Jim Thompson for his race against the idiot Ron Estes. We actually have a chance to flip the 4rth district house seat from red to blue in the next general election. And that is why these celebrities came to Wichita.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who pulled off a big upset against top House Democrat Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th District in last month’s primary, is now here in Kansas to help bolster the campaign of James Thompson who wants to win in the 4rth of the Kansas House.
"And they said what we did in the Bronx wouldn't' interest Kansas," Ocasio-Cortez said. Ocasio-Cortez is not only a member of the Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) she also appeals to many Kansas feminists and Latinos. I personally sat in the DSA,VIP section, up front. There were about 4,000 peoplein attendance this day.
"And they said what we did in the Bronx wouldn't' interest Kansas," Ocasio-Cortez said. She talked about a teacher she really liked, Mrs Whipple, who assigned her a project to study the state of Kansas. She also pointed out that Kansas was the state that helped push for a free state vs. a slave state during the civil war.
Bernie Sanders, who ran as a Democrat in the last presidential primary, was also present to support the candidacyof James Thompson.
"The Kochs raised $400 million," Sanders said. "They represent the wealthy and powerful.
They will not buy this electorate. The system works for all of us not just the Koch Brothers."
Of course the main point of all of this was to support the candidacyof James Thompson.
All through the event several points were made that all agreed to:

Raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour.
Free college and Tech school tuition along with helping those students who already are over burdened with tuition loans.
Health care for all- single payer.
Legalize marijuana.
Women's choice on abortion.

Then Thompson spoke:
"Who are Vets," he asked? followed by "who are the  teachers? who are in unions?- you are all the wall that separates us from the fascists."
" I should have been in jail," he said. "I grew up in poverty. When I see people struggling I know what it means."
He related that he joined the military to get out of poverty. He spoke highly of the military and those who defend our country oversees."
"They say we should be centrists- Republican lights," Thompson said as the crowd booed. "If that worked Hillary would have won Kansas."
"Ron Estes doesn't want to go out and meet the people," Thompson said.
The crowd shouted "Where's Ron?"
"There will be 17 debates," Thompson said. He asked the crowd if Estes was going to show up to any of these debates: "Or is Ron Estes going to continue to hide?"
There was a massive crowed at this event and things could not be looking better for Thompson in the up-coming race. This could be a turning point for Kansas.
There was quite a crowd.

Why The Thai Cave Rescue Story Drew So Much Attention Compared To Other Crises and Events

$

For weeks we have seen every detail of the lives of those 12 boys who were rescued from that cave in Thailand. It was a remarkable story. It was a story with a happy ending. It was newsworthy. But where the minute by minute details and day long coverage really worth it?
In the last several years our mainstream news media seem to look for "heroes" they can honour for various acts of courage under siege, whether related to weather, terrorism or just plain old crime. It's as if our capitalist system has a deficit of heroes to worship and our mainstream news media is looking to fix that situation.
There are children in trouble all over the world. There are refugees, children who go hungry, children who live in deep poverty or other man-made forms of injustice. These children's stories could easily make good and important news stories. Also, the coach who took these children into a cave right before the rainy season, did something very stupid and yet he gets made into a hero.
The following story looks into the hype related to the kids in the cave story. This story asks a lot of good questions that a lot of journalists should have been asking. -SJ Otto

FromNPR:
Like millions of global citizens, Abraham Leno has been riveted by the story of the 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped in a cave in Thailand.
"I sat around the radio with my family and we wanted to hear the recent updates of the kids, every little detail," he says. "To see all the governments sending their best divers, giving them equipment, offering their moral support — it was a beautiful thing to see."

But Leno has another perspective. As a youth, he spent ten years in refugee camps in Guinea. Now working at the American Refugee Committee, he wishes that the media had paid more attention to his plight and his fellow refugees: "It would have shed a better light to create the understanding necessary to help us."
Others share his concerns. Manyang Reath Kher became a Lost Boy at age 3 and later founded the charity Humanity Helping Sudan. He says, "I don't want to sound horrible to those kids [in the cave], but the attention they got, it should be spread around. Give that to other children, too."
The aid community is grappling with that issue as well. While they all stress that they were deeply moved by the story of the boys in Thailand, they raise a point: Can the world bring the same level of care and resources to other children living in crisis? More than half a million Rohingya children live in camps in Bangladesh, for example, and 800 children die of malaria each day.

There are, of course, reasons why the cave story is so riveting.

Mao and Stalin greet us from the small town of Lindsborg, Kansas

My friends from Spain, Mark Davis and Pedro Esbrit, along with my wife Cam Gentry and I, have been travelling around our home state of Kansas (except Pedro who has never lived here) viewing the sites and small towns. We went to the town of in Lindsborg, KS, which is a small Swedish community. We stopped for lunch at the Swedish Crown Restaurant, on the main street of that town. While we were having lunch I noticed they have small carved statues of famous people, such as past US presidents and famous foreign leaders such as Charles de Gaulle, Mao Zedong (毛泽东) and Joseph Stalin (Иосиф Виссарионович Сталин/ იოსებ ბესარიონის ძე სტალინი).

This photo of Lindsborg, with the restaurant, was taken by Mark Davis.

I was quite surprised to see Mao and Stalin. Kansas, as a whole, is a very conservative and reactionary state.[1] Those who call themselves socialists are growing in number, here in Kansas. There are a handful of Marxist-Leninists in the state. I just had to take some pictures of Mao, Stalin and de Gaulle.

I also took some pictures of Kansas wildlife. Kansas may be conservative, but the state dose have some remarkable natural resources for those who take the time to admire them.
Here is a picture of a lizard I took. It is a skink.

We saw plenty of bison, or buffalo, at the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge.

Vote Lacey Cruse on Tuesday, for 4th district Sedgwick County

This coming Tuesday, August 7, The voters of SedgwickCounty's 4th Districtwill have an opportunity to get rid of the bigoted ass hole Richard Ranzau, the present county commissioner.

Let's remember that Ranzau snubbed a Latino reporter and he and others sent back a grant for WIC(a government program to help women in poverty to get milk and other necessities to their infants) money because they were afraid Latino children might get some of that free milk. He has a streak of petty meanness and he needs to go.
On the Republican side he is being challenged by Hugh Nicks who has been attacking him, with mail ads, for his voting against funding the Sedgwick County Zoo, opposing excepting grants for senior-citizen housing and his obstruction to expanding jobs in the county. While this site does not endorse Republicans, Nicks would be a welcome change from the ultra-conservative and bigoted Ranzau.
On the Democrat side we have Lacey Cruse, a young woman who admits she is new to politics but she is very open to expanding jobs in the country and would be a breath of fresh air from the stale Ranzau.

.Lacey Cruse.

We will have more upcoming election news for this area in the near future.

Who should be our next governor?

By SJ Otto
In just a few days Kansas will determine who will run for governor. So who should we vote for, who should this blog endorse? For the Republicans the very worst is Kris Kobach. He is absolutely horrible. He will put us back where we were when Sam Brownback was governor. He will decimate education and he will keep Kansas in the dark over Obamacare, expanding Medicaid and all those issues related to providing the poor with access to health care. So our recommendation is to vote for anyone but Kobach or Jeff Colyer, who is almost as bad. Jim Barnett or Ken Selzer would be an improvement over these two ass holes. Also notice that after all those young people complained that the NRA is preventing any kind of common sense gun rules, Kobach and Colyer both brag of a perfect score in support from the NRA. Another way to look at that is they are telling our young people "to go to hell," if they want any kind of gun law changes.
On the Democrat side we are supporting Laura Kelly. The other two might also make good candidates but we chose Laura Kelly.

The Candidates:

Republicans:
Jim Barnett, former state senator.
Jeff Colyer. Present Governor and dismal failure.
Kris Kobach, Present Kansas Secretary of State and complete ass hole.
Ken Selzer, Insurance Commissioner.
Patrick Kucera, Pastor.
Tyler Ruzich, High School Student.
Joseph Tutera Jr., High School Student.

Democrats:
Carl Brewer, Wichita's first elected African-American mayor.
 Laura Kelly, state senator.
Josh Svaty, a secretary of agriculture and state representative.

Two other candidates for Democrat in Kansas, Jack Bergeson, Arden Andersen

I have looked all over the web to get ALL the candidates on the Republican side and the Democrat side and in both cases they have left people off. I'm guessing these people don't have a lot of money or they don't the blessing of their local parties. They are Jack Bergeson, Arden Andersen. Their names were hard to find. They have been buried below the other candidates in election article after election article. I just plain haven't been able to find their names and I didn't realize they were running. I don't know anything about them or their background. In our political system many candidates get buried as "not serious." Their not important to the main stream news media (in this case The Wichita Eagle and the three main TV stations). They really don't count and the establishment really doesn't want you to vote for them. So here they are and you can vote for them anyway.

Progressive Democrats influenced the Democratic Primary

For those of us who are working in Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), we had two major victories last week. Lacey Cruse, a folk singer and political newcomer whose campaign poster proclaimed “NO MORE OLD WHITE GUYS,” will face off against incumbent Richard Ranzau in the race for Sedgwick County Commissioner.
And James Thompson will face off with Republican Ron Estes for the 4rth district representative seat.
Cruse was supported by members of DSA and a lot of political activists from this county. She beat out Michael Kinard, a Democrat established activist and former Wichita school board member. There is little doubt that Kinard was seen as a member of the traditional Democratic Party. The Kansas Democrats have done what the party has done nation, wide, raised money, stuck to the political middle and avoided any real issues. This could spell a real change for this area, since Lacey has been backed by the more progressive members of the Democratic Party.
The big challenge in the county race now is to see if DSA and the other activist can out vote the good-ol'-boy network, presently represented by Richard Ranzau, out. Ranzau is an openly bigoted right-wing hack who almost lost his own seat to a more progressive Republican, Hugh Nicks. Ranzau snubbed a Latino reporter, years ago, and he helped send back a grant for WIC (a government program to help women in poverty to get milk and other necessities to their infants) money because they were afraid immigrant Latino children might get some of that free milk. He has a streak of petty meanness and he needs to go. Do the local political activist, who are clearly energised and inspired, have what it takes to unseat Ranzau?
The Next big win was James Thompson, who recently had the backing and support of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who recently won in New York (she is a DSA member) and Bernie Sanders. Thompson already has a large political organizations with the same political activist behind him (along with DSA). Thompson was able to fill Century II with supporters of both his campaign and the more progressive movement within the Democrat Party. That movement has had mixed results nation wide. But in the 4rth congressional district of Kansas, the progressives clearly have the upper hand of the Democratic Party. Thompson also nearly beat the lazy "stay away from the public/ What!? Me work?!" Republican Ron Estes.
Even if Thompson and Lacey don't win, progressive Democrats in this county and district have made their voices heard. These elections will probably be close and they are an indicator that "business as usual" within the Democratic Party is about over. Progressive activists are already making history.

Aretha Franklin was more than just a singer and entertainer, she was also a voice for the civil rights movement. We can be thankful that we had such entertainers during the civil rights movement, during the 1960s. The following article explains some of her political work:

From the BBC:
Her Baptist minister father was the organiser behind the 1963 Detroit Walk to Freedom - the largest-ever demonstration for civil rights in the US until the March on Washington later that year, when the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr made his "I have a dream" speech.
King was a frequent guest in her father's home.
At 16 years of age, Franklinwent on tour with him, just after recording her first album.
She would sing at King's funeral a decade later.
King's daughter, Dr Bernice King, called Franklin a "shining example" of how to use the arts to support social change.

Little homes in Wichita bring out the worst (classism) in people

By SJ Otto
Bigots against poor people have raised their angry voices once more. Landowners have hired a lawyer and they have made threats against the City of Wichita hoping to force them not support affordable housing for lower class homes here in Wichita.

"According to KTEN,Micro Mansions plans to put 90 tiny homes on 15-acres of land. The developer of the land is David Murfin. The city says he made requests, including the annexation to the city and the approval of the plat  for development.
Planning Director Dale Miller spoke before The Wichita City Council to address annexation questions. He told council annexation automatically rezones the land from 20,000 square feet to 4,000-5,000 square feet. Based on legal advice from the City Attorney there was no legal authority to deny the plat."

People nearby this proposed development have invested as much as a $million in their homes so they can complain that other people should pretty much go back to living in the streets, homeless. One good reason for people to invest so much in their homes is so they can practice classism and create their own illusion that they are better than other people who live in this town. They want respect and they have paid for it. They seem to feel that other people in this town should "know their place" and stay in the ghettos where they have been forced to live in the past.
There are also those who have harassed those who support the tiny homes. According to KAKE TV:

"We have a copy of the email that reads, “We’re going to tell you this one “leave Micro Mansions alone.” If not, we will use all of our resources, money and means to stop you. You’re dealing with powerful people that have no problems attacking your business, life and family if you choose not to stop. This is the first and final warning. Stop all efforts of opposition against Micro Mansions now. You think $4000 on GoFundMe is going to stop us? We own Wichita, good luck with that.”

These people don't mince words. They mean to intimidate.
There are a lot of classist people in Wichita who want to make sure that they can assert their influence and control the areas where they live. People continue to stereotype poor people as an excuse to keep them separated from the rest of society. It is bigotry in its purest form as of today. It is one of the few last remaining form of bigotry that is still legal today.
The tiny houses can cost as little as $23,000.tiny-house-mini-motives.jpg
The real problem is that housing and property is often out of reach for many working class Americans. Greedy landlords and land speculators are making big $bucks on homes while many working people struggle to get themselves a place to live. It is a real problem today. Many people in Wichita see homes as an investment while there are many citizens who need homes to actually live in. This issue has brought out the worst in people. But when some people are rejected as sub-human and given no rights, what do people here expect?!

Workin’ for the Democratic Man!- Chapter 3

The following is a chapter excerpt from Mark Spies is alive and well and living in the suburbs, by Steve Otto,a yet to be published book. This book is less about politics and more about entertainment. It is more of an insult than it is about serious politics.

Jim Browning was a short stocky man about as tall as I was and that wasn’t very tall. I don’t often work for members of the Democratic Party, but this guy was local. I knew him and I knew his politics. Although he wore a suite, he also had a slight beard, his hair had just a touch of gray and he had a laid back look about him.
His desk was a meager looking plain wooden table with drawers. His office was small and rather plain except for all the election posters he had on the wall. I was sitting at a table full of information pamphlets that I would soon be giving away door to door.  Browning was running for the Representative to my district and he was running as a Democrat.
He was running against a far-right-wing Republican. His name is Mike O’Connally, a true Tea-Party Yahoo. This young twerp looked as yuppie as it was possible to get. Always in the three-piece suit and tie, with his boyish looks, he couldn’t have been much over 25. He had short crew-cut style hair and he was clean shaven. He looked like a Jehovah’s Witness travelling around on the bicycle. But he would have none of that. The chamber of commerce and had just backed him, along with the Koch brother’s fake think tank Americans for Prosperity backed O’Connally against a moderate Republican who had served the business community well over the last 20 years. But now, The Chamber and the Koch brother stooges decided they could get a better deal. In fact, they owned this guy, lock, stock and barrel. O’Connally was also tied in with ALEC so he could get free speeches he didn’t have to write.
Sitting next to me was a friend of mine, a free-lance writer named Hector Helious. He was about my age, dressed rather business casual and he started laughing when he told us he had heard O’Connally giving a speech at an economic forum put on by our local Chamber of Commerce. He recorded the speech and to his surprise, it was word-for-word identical to a speech he had taped by a politician who spoke at a similar event in St. Louis.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Hector said as he stroked his short goatee. “I didn’t realize you can get elected knowing nothing at all. Both O’Connell and this other guy, Gibbs, had pulled up ready-made speeches from ALEC. All you have to do is parrot what these ass holes tell you to say. Talk about an easy job!”
One thing we all noticed was that O’Connally won the primary election where only 19% of people voted. Surely when we explain that O’Connally had used the low primary turnout as a “dirty trick” to try and flush out a moderate Republican, it wouldn’t be that hard to convince people to vote for Browning as a reasonable alternative—or would it?
I started walking door to door in Browning’s district and already I knew we had problems. I went up to this normal looking middle class house, with blue wooden framing on the outside and the guy inside literally gave me the creeps.
Out walks this old fart wearing overalls, a john Deer hat, with white hair and crooked teeth. He told me; “Them thar libaruls want to take all our guns away and make ever-body gay. I never vote fer nun them thar Dem’crats. Ahm a Kanzen. I always vote Republic'n.”
The next guy I came across called himself Ray. He also described himself as a Republican. He’s a 40 something, not that old with dark hair, wearing blue jeans and a clean shave and he looked like a good ol’ boy as far as a nice open minded guy. But he wasn’t.
“People vote Democrat because they want a welfare check rather than working for a living,” he said. Apparently he believed only Republicans hold jobs.
“Do you seriously believe no one who votes Democrat holds an actual job?” I asked rather astounded that anyone would actually say that, much less believe it.
“Some uh them thar people work at government jobs in one form or another,” he said. “Those are just another form uh welfare. Dem’crats get ‘dem a job where they only work a few hours a day and get what amounts to a government handout.”
A few minutes later this same jackass was bitching because there is only one place to renew a person’s driver’s license.
“It took me three hours of waiting and there is only one office left in town!” he said.
I thought to myself; “You dumb-ass! Did you really think all these people working in government offices didn’t really do any work?” Then there is that annoying belief that poor people are just lazy and chose to live that way.
“Those people could get jobs if they really wanted them,” Ray said.
“Do you have a job?” I asked him.
“Of course ay do. I always had a job. You think Ay’m one them thar lazy poor Dem’crats?”
“So you never had to look for work?”
“Nah!”
“So you haven’t actually had to look for work in a long time?”
“I keep my job. That’s cuz ay’m not lazy. I work hard and don’t lose my job. People who aren’t working’ choose to live that way. They make a choice. That is why I never vote for those lazy people who vote Democrat.”
I decided that I would attach my Republican opponent at his weak spot, his corrupt relationship with the Koch Brothers and the Chamber.
“Did you know that Mike O’Connally is finance largely by the Koch Brothers and their PAC Americans for Prosperity?” I asked Ray. “So the Koch Brothers are actually trying to buy this election. They used dirty tricks to get O’Connally to beat a moderate Republican in the primary so he could win the general by just beating a Democrat. The Chamber of Commerce was behind him also.”
“What do you have against the Koch Bruthas? They are producers. The Democrats err supported by parasites who just want to get free money from our gove'ment, while people like the Koch Brothels are producing the wealth in this contra.”
Well, I finally decided that talking to Ray was a lot like talking to a wall. Surely I would have better luck with one of the other working class voters in this largely working class neighborhood. Surely there was someone in this neighborhood who was bothered by the idea of a corrupt politician running for the benefit of a few moneyed interests over the interests of the workers.
So I walked a few blocks to a large pale red house and knocked on the door. This balding guy with glasses came out to talk to me. He looked smarter than the last two. Would that turn out to be true?
“I’m Mark; I’m canvassing on behalf of Jim Browning, who is running for this district’s House of Representatives.”
“I’m Phil,” the man quickly answered. “Is he a Republican?”
“No,” I answered.
“I can’t vote for a Democrat.”
“Why?”
“He might be pro-union. “
“Unions aren’t supporting Democrats anymore.”
“I can’t take a chance. It isn’t fair that they make all that money and the rest of us just make a little over minimum wage. Do you know how much more those Boeing Union guys make than I do?”
“But their unions earn them that money. They pay dues, go to meetings give up their incomes when it comes time to strike. It takes a lot of work being in the union.”
“I think they are all just lazy and want an easy pay check. They don’t want to work too hard so they join a union.”
“You mean they’re lazy like the poor people on welfare and the people who work for the government?”
“That’s right!”
“But if they are so lazy, how do they get those benefits?”
“They buy off our elections through the Democrats. It’s all about corruption.”
“What about the Koch Brothers and their PACs, the Americans for Prosperity and their use of ALEC. They give way more than unions to buy elections. Did you know that O’Connally is solidly in the pockets of the Chamber of Commerce and the Koch Brothers? He’s in debt to those people for a lot. Whatever they ask for he will have to give it to them. He won’t have to pay any attention to your needs or those who work as you do. He can put all the tax burden on you, while giving his rich friends all the tax breaks.”
“But they are rich and this is America where you earn all that wealth and power. If I ever get rich, and I hope someday I do, I want to be able to count on the political system to protect my rights. People who don’t like the Koch Brothers are just jealous that they don’t have all that money.”
“But Browning would defend you and your rights right now. Don’t you want a politician who cares what happens to you now, before you ‘get rich?”
“If I’m not rich it’s my own fault. I’m not going to blame the Koch Brothers or any other rich people because I don’t live the way I want to. The answer is to get rich.”
By now I realized I was just talking to another wall. Throughout the neighborhood, I was running into weird ass yahoos who didn’t seem to have a lick of sense between their ears. It was nearly the end of the day and it was at a rather large house and maybe this guy made a little more money. Of course I didn’t know if they would make any difference.
“Hi! I’m Bob,” the enthusiastic tall thin man said.
I thought maybe this guy might be a little different. So I decided to go straight at the environmental argument.
“People here don’t like them tree-huggin’ enviermenalists,” Bob said. “And there ain’t no global warmin.’ That’s just a scam by them libaruls who just want to control us with all their socialism and communism.”
“Why would they want to do that?” I asked in amazement. After all, I was a socialist and I couldn’t see any clear cut link between socialists and liberals—accept on some social issues. Most socialists and Marxists I knew hated liberals almost more then they hated conservatives. I have to admit that I was one of the exception to the rule.
“It’s all about control,” Bob explained. “That’s what the Democrats is all about. They just want to control us and tell us how to live. I’m an individualist. I don’t depend on anyone for anything. I’m completely self sufficient.”
“An individualist?  Do you make your own clothes, build your own car, and grow your own food?”
“Well that doesn’t matter. Modern man uses the pay check rather than the bow and arrow for his food. I just don’t believe in taking hand-outs.”
“Most people who have taken government handouts have paid into the system at one time or another.  Even the few people who haven’t ever held a job pay taxes and spend their money on the economy. So everyone is interdependent in one way or another—unless you live as a hermit in a cave.”
“Oh! That’s ridiculous. People on welfare are bums and I’m not one of those. Those people are ignorant. The reason Republicans win in this state is because people in Kansasare better educated. Ignorant people vote for Democrats.”
“Since I’m working for a Democrat, you must think I’m very ignorant.’
“You don’t understand simple economics that much I can say for sure. If you understood how economics work you would never vote for a Democrat.”
“I guess I just need more education,” I said sarcastically.
“You need a job, that is for sure.”
“I have a job.”
His jaw dropped and he gave me a look of surprise as if he had never heard of a working Democrat before.
Finally—done with canvassing for the day. And if I had seriously given it any thought, I would never do it again. After a hard day on the campaign trail, it was time to kick back and relax in my black leather chair with a cold Magnum Malt liquor can. The TV was on and one of our esteemed City Councilmen Cal Brewhaa was on TV talking about a new airline coming to Wichita, known throughout the city as the “Air Capital.” Brewhaa talked about all of the great jobs it would bring here.
“We hope to have the AA-Hole Airline moving to Wichita next month,” said Brewhaa. “This will provide lots of aircraft jobs.”
Yes it would, I thought to myself. But what kind of jobs? Will there be minimum or near minimum wages! Or will there be any union jobs that pay an actual living wage. This town was good at finding low income jobs for the little people who lived here. Many, just like those I had talked to while canvassing were likely to work at such low paying jobs and then bitch because they can barely get by—then vote Republican!
Make no mistake about it. This is a one-horse town. It’s the air capital of the Mid-west.
Of course those who don’t want to build air craft can blow it out their asses, as far as our city leaders were concerned. Most people with significant talents, which did not go well with building aircraft, left this town—those who were smart.
Finally the day had come to reap the rewards of our hard fought campaign labor. It was campaign night. It’s a great time to mingle with political folks and swill cheap boos while watching to see if any of our candidates actually win. On those rare occasions when a Democrat does win in the Wichita, it is a big celebration. I was wearing my business casual duds and sitting at one of the many folding chairs around the folding tables covered with all kinds of nifty snacks, cheese, crackers, finger meets, etc. Then there was a bar that served all kinds of soft drinks, coffee, a few types of beer and wine. This was a large building which used to be an old theater and had lots of meeting areas. It had lots of homey decorations and real furniture.
What I liked best about these events were all the cute Democrat women. Some were quite sexy looking. That is one thing the Republicans did not have was really sexy women. And their women were as dull as they come.
I stood with Browning by the TV all night as the local news reported one district’s results after another.  By now I figured that losing this election was a foregone conclusion. But what I didn’t expect was the percentage of votes Browning did get. By about midnight, with more than 90% of the votes in, Browning got 43% of the popular vote. Was that possible?!
Could some of the voters actually grown tired of Brownback’s[1]personal punk boy? Were there some voters who actually took the time to look at issues and the blatant corruption of the Republican Party in this coup they used to gain control for their corporate greed? Apparently I got to a few voters. I don’t know who they were, but not every voter in this state is an ignoramus. Some can actually think for themselves and that was a great revelation for me that night.
