DSA group discusses police culture of killing people

By SJ Otto
Teaching cops to kill people was among the discussions held at this month's Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) meeting, Sunday evening. Less than 20 people were there. A film clip of Dave Grossman, encouraging police to learn to kill people instinctively, as a part of routine training, was shown at the meeting.
A person in attendance explained that police are trained to be part of a culture of killing people. It is similar to being in the military were Grossman explained that killing a suspected criminal, is necessary to save the live of both the police and the other law abiding citizens who he said are at risk if such lives are not taken. Grossman spans the country, giving lectures on how police can kill a suspect rather than taking a chance that trying to arrest that suspect might end in a violent retaliation.
Several film clips were shown from a sight calledPoliceOne.com. There were several examples of Grossman giving lectures in which he encourages police to kill a suspect rather than taking him in. He tells cops to consider every encounter life and death—as in the military.
It was all about eliminating dangers to the policeman. What was missing was any respect for the rights of the accused. In one film they show two policemen pulling over a car for running a red light. When the officers approach the car, one of the policemen notices that he had a past run in with the passenger in the car. There was a gun in the glove box. He screams at the suspect to put up his hands and not to move. The officer takes the gun out of the glove box and puts it on the ground. For some reason the suspect tries to open the car door and both police shoot the unarmed man. The narrator explains that the passenger had been arrested and sent to 13 years in prison for aiming a gun at some cops. It was for that reason that this policeman felt justified in firing on the suspect even though he was unarmed at the time. The narrator explains that this is a justified killing because of what this suspect did 13 years ago.
The group discussed what a defunded police force would look like. Many people there agreed we will need to rebuild some kind of police force. But we need to change the attitude of our nation’s police. We should not draw people in who like to misuse authority and kill unarmed people. A change in police attitudes was a main reason for getting rid of present police departments and starting over. One person explained that a police union was actually very progressive at certain times in history. But in recent times that union allows police to cover for each other when one of them has misused their authority.
Everyone was encouraged to wear a mask to the meeting. Some were available to anyone who came without one. The group is stocking up on hand sanitizers. The group is very conscious about the dangers of the coronavirus.
The local DSA is also working on a Bail Out program for people who are arrested during the various marches going on in the country today.

Captain Higgins targets suspected gang members

This video was discussed at the meeting. This Higgins person seems to think he is like Dirty Harry. He taunts suspected gang members, inviting them to get killed by him. His attitude is vulgar and he seems lack any respect for human life.

Life in the solar system- Proposed NASA Mission Would Visit Neptune's Curious Moon Triton

Science news!

By SJ Otto
When it comes to the subject of life on other planets/moons/ etc. I find it all fascinating. I remember when I first read about the idea that Europa had a large ocean of salty water below its crust of ice, in a cold temperature of -250˚. Next there are the moons of Titan and  Enceladus of Saturn. Enceladus is a tiny moon with water below its surface and it has geysers that allow liquid water to stream out. Then there is the frozen world of Titan, a moon with a thick atmosphere and liquid hydrocarbons. There is no water, but the liquid hydrocarbons may provide the moon with the liquid it needs for primitive life forms there.
Now there is the possibility that the planet Neptune’s moonTriton(-290˚)has life forms below the surface, much likeEuropaor Enceladus. For me it is always exciting to imagine that there are living things in our solar system. It would mean that we are not alone in the galaxy. It would be really cool if there are other living things in our solar system.

So from NASA:
When NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by Neptune's strange moon Triton three decades ago, it wrote a planetary science cliffhanger.
Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft ever to have flown past Neptune, and it left a lot of unanswered questions. The views were as stunning as they were puzzling, revealing massive, dark plumes of icy material spraying out from Triton's surface. But how? Images showed that the icy landscape was young and had been resurfaced over and over with fresh material. But what material, and from where?
How could an ancient moon six times farther from the Sun than Jupiter still be active? Is there something in its interior that is still warm enough to drive this activity?
A new mission competing for selection under NASA's Discovery Program aims to untangle these mysteries. Called Trident, like the three-pronged spear carried by the ancient Roman sea god Neptune, the team is one of four that is developing concept studies for new missions. Up to two will be selected by summer 2021 to become a full-fledged mission and will launch later in the decade.
Investigating how Triton has changed over time would give scientists a better understanding of how solar system bodies evolve and work.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Wins Democratic Primary Election by a Landslide

It does not surprise me at all that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won a re-election in her district. According toNews Breakshe won by a landslide. While I am not surprised, I am pleased. From everything I have heard AOC had everything thrown at her from both the conservative wing of the Democratic Party and the Republicans. The establishment has tried to derail her. There is little doubt that the other so called members of “The Squad”are under attack from the more established members of the Democratic Party. While AOC is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), other such Democrats are merely “progressive” as was Elizabeth Warren. We now have a foot hold on the political landscape of the US and it is up to all of us to keep that foot hold. That means supporting new members of the progressive wing, such as “The Squad” and supporting even newer members of congress that have progressive leanings. This is way more important than just supporting Joe Biden or even Bernie Sanders. These lower ranking politicians have a much better chance of changing things than the yahoos we are electing to the presidency. Let’s carry on…..
SJ Otto

Back in 2018, some people wrote off Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez‘s campaign and victorious win in the primary election as a fluke. Yes, her success was a surprise to everyone, including herself, but there was no way in denying that AOC had something special. She was a fighter and still is. Last night, the 30-year-old congresswoman won her second victory in the Democratic primary election. AOC’s main opponent was Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, a former journalist and former republican. AOC obtained 72.6 percent of the votes.

Latest spike in the coronavirus brings out the worst in humanity—The scum de la scum!

There are times when politics in this country goes from conservative to grotesque. Some people are so cold hearted and self centered that they don’t care who dies from the coronavirus. Our President Donald Trump certainly does not care who he hurts or who gets hurt. Unfortunately there are many others in this country who are right behind him.
Just recently Trump asked The US Supreme Court to strike down the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). We are in the middle of a pandemic and he wants to wipe out health coverage for as many as 23 million Americans. It seems unthinkable and incredibly cruel. And yet our leader has plunged ahead on a path that will destroy people’s lives and possibly cost people their lives. And it seems as if he just doesn’t care. He has his far-right agenda and nothing is more important than that agenda.
Unfortunately he has many followers and whether they follow him directly or they just happen to be as heartless as him, they all contribute to an attitude that other people’s lives are less important that someone’s personal individual freedom.
According to Forbes:

“There are now over a dozens states who have experienced repeated anti stay-at-home” protests. Some of these protests, while purported to be spontaneous, it turns out are often less an example of grassroots organising and more an example of what is referred to as “astroturf” organising, or well-funded groups that organise supporters to make it look like a grassroots movement.”

As this article points out, this is way more than just some people who are spontaneously rebelling against stay-at-home rules and measures. Much of it is organized by far right organizations:

“In Michigan, protests organised by the Michigan Conservative Coalition and the Michigan Freedom Fund - whose chairman manages a large amount of the financial investments of Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos - blocked ambulances from delivering patients to hospitals. Participants in the protest chanted, “Open up Michigan!” At one point, some protesters were heard chanting, “lock her up” in reference to Michigan Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, who responded, “The cars were blocking one of our hospitals, so an ambulance literally wasn’t able to get into the bay for ten minutes,” continuing “This is the kind of behaviour that extends the needs for stay-at-home orders.”

So not only are these brutish protesters selfish because they won’t wear masks or stay at home, there are political groups trying to gain from the pandemic. All this is taking place as the nation tried to open up the economy and businesses such as bars and restaurants and the results is a spike in our nation’s sick and dying from the coronavirus. According to The Washington Post:

“Seven states are reporting new highs for current coronavirus hospitalizations, according to data tracked by The Washington Post — Arizona, Arkansas, California, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas— as the number of infections continues to climb across the South and West. More than 800 covid-19 deaths were reported in the United States on Tuesday, the first time fatalities have increased since June 7.”

It is hard to understand what a conservative leader, as Trump, or those various organizations that are fighting against the stay-at-home orders, get out of such actions. Do they save tax payers money by denying people government aided health care? What ever they are getting, they are getting it at the expense of people’s lives. We are seeing the dregs of humanity, the bottom of the barrel, and the slimiest of the slime balls. We are seeing humanity at its worst. Polls are showing that Joe Biden is way ahead of Trump and if the election were held tomorrow, Trump would be tossed out on his ass. That is what he deserves. Unfortunately many of us don’t expect the kind of change this country really needs. It will be a slight improvement, but not much of an improvement at that. As I watch the right-wing jerks, yelling at people and showing disrespect mainly at people who have the nerve to want to live, at the expense of some jerks idea of freedom, I am sickened—pure and simple.
These are difficult times and the scum who are causing them seem to have no plans to change their ways anytime soon.

Could a space helicopter find life on Saturn’s moon Titan

$

I have been fascinated by the latest exploration of the outer reaches of our Solar System. There are several moons around what they call the “gas giant” planets. These are big planets, mostly atmosphere, way larger than Earth, with lots of moons and rings around them. Recently I posted an article about the small group of moons at which scientist hope to find primitive alien life. If they find it on any of these moons, it will prove we are not alone in the Universe. It will mean that there is life on other planets/ moons and other heavenly bodies. It is also likely that somewhere in the Milky Way Galaxy there is intelligent life. So here is an article on a proposed plan to study Titan, a moon around the planet Saturn. – SJ Otto

Orange skies, icy dunes and methane clouds—no, it’s not some post-apocalyptic picture of Earth. It’s what Saturn’s moon Titan might look like to explorers. While it doesn’t sound like paradise, scientists, including my colleagues in chemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder, think Titan has enough in common with Earth that it’s worth studying. But is there life on Titan? Right now, we can’t say for sure.

Cassini-Huygens, the mission that discovered most of what’s known about Titan, ended in 2017. Data from Cassini,  which orbited Saturn, and Huygens, Cassini’s surface lander on Titan, confirmed that Titan has water as well as numerous reserves of carbon-containing chemicals. Life on Earth is based on complex carbon-based chemicals, like DNA. Based on what’s known about Earth’s history, finding water and carbon-containing chemicals mixed up in a primordial soup could be the right recipe for life. Enter Dragonfly, a proposed mission to explore Titan’s surface using a lander equipped with helicopter-like propellers. Dragonfly’s mission could help us understand our own primordial evolution—or even discover extraterrestrial life.
Titan has some features reminiscent of Earth. There are clouds, lakes (albeit filled with oil, not water) and even tides. Storms form on Titan’s surface, just like on Earth. But Titan’s storms are made of methane, not water vapor. And although Titan’s temperature is well above absolute zero, it’s still absolutely freezing, with an average surface temperature of minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit, it has a dense atmosphere, so you wouldn’t need a pressurized space suit to walk around—just oxygen and many, many layers of very warm clothes.
While scientists don’t know yet if life could exist on Titan, Cassini-Huygens’ discovery of a buried saltwater ocean on Titan was a promising sign for primordial soup. Cassini-Huygens managed to find the ocean without ever getting its feet wet. Electromagnetic waves, like the ones that let your car stereo pick up your favorite country music, can tell scientists a lot about the materials they pass through.

Ocasio-Cortez raises AIPAC ire over effort to tie Israel aid to annexation

It is about time someone challenged the unconditional support of Israeldespite that countries repression of the Palestinian people. Israel has treated the Palestinian People as second class citizens and has created a kind of apartheid system where those people can only live in a few places.- SJ Otto

“Progressive lawmakers warn annexation ‘would lay the groundwork for Israelbecoming an apartheid state.”

From Politico:
A dozen Democratic lawmakers have signed on to a hotly debated letter spearheaded by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that calls for placing conditions on aid to Israel if it moves forward with plans to unilaterally annex parts of the West Bank or continues related actions, according to a copy obtained by POLITICO.
The letter, parts of which were previously leaked to the media, was condemned Monday by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee as harmful to America’s interests before the statement or its signers were finalized.
“Should the Israeli government continue down this path, we will work to ensure non-recognition of annexed territories as well as pursue legislation that conditions the $3.8 billion in U.S. military funding to Israel to ensure that U.S. taxpayers are not supporting annexation in any way,” Ocasio-Cortez’s letter reads. “We will include human rights conditions and the withholding of funds for the offshore procurement of Israeli weapons equal to or exceeding the amount the Israeli government spends annually to fund settlements, as well as the policies and practices that sustain and enable them.”

The letter, addressed to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, also said that annexation “would actively harm prospects for a future in which all Israelis and Palestinians can live with full equality, human rights and dignity, and would lay the groundwork for Israelbecoming an apartheid state, as your predecessor John Kerry warned in 2014.”

Thoughts and feelings over the US Fourth of July celebration- 2020

Today is the  Fourth of July for 2020. Each year I write an article about the Fourth of July and what I really think this holiday means. I analyse the US Revolution/Revolutionary War and the changes it brought. From here down, I am posting what I posted last year. Not much has changed, if anything, from last year:

That is a holiday I have mixed feelings about. No doubt that there will be plenty of jingoistic TV shows and commercials on TV. There will also be radio spots promoting all the wrong things about this holiday. It was a great revolution for its time. The United States was created out of a change, based in part on the anti-feudalistic political movements in Europe and anti-colonialism in the Americas. A small group of colonies of the United Kingdom decided it was time for their own independent country. So they kicked the British out. They got rid of any form of feudal aristocracy. It all seemed good at the time. And let's not forget that this revolution was strictly for the benefit of white people of European decent. Black slaves and Native American Indians were not invited to this new world government.

Trump and his chums learn to cheat on elections—Supreme Court helps them

$

By SJ Otto
In recent years, the Republican Party has found ways to bypass actual elections to win without the popular vote. So in the last few decades they have learned to manipulate the Electoral College system so that they win, without a majority of the vote.
Just recently the Supreme Court voted to protect the Electoral College. According to Yahoo News:

“The 538 people who cast the actual votes for president in December as part of the Electoral College are not free agents and must vote as the laws of their states direct, the Supreme Court ruled Monday.
The unanimous decision in the "faithless elector" case was a defeat for advocates of changing the Electoral College, who hoped a win would force a shift in the method of electing presidents toward a nationwide popular vote. But it was a win for state election officials who feared that empowering rogue electors would cause chaos.”

When it comes to democracy, few things are as undemocratic as the Electoral College. The institution was put together by the US founding fathers as a protection against the people who may elect someone who is undeserving. If the wrong person should get elected the college delegates can override what the people have voted for and they can vote in any person they decide on. In recent years the Republicans have been able to vote in their candidates without a majority of the votes. They simply put their candidates in states where they can win delegates without the popular votes a politician usually needs to win.
If all of this is not enough to piss of the public, Eric Trump has accused “Leftists” of censorship. According to the Trumps and most conservatives, all “Leftists” are criminals, on par with heroin dealers, child molesters and criminals in general. According to American Glory:

“President Trump’s son Eric appeared on Fox News Saturday night to warn viewers that the push towards mail-in voting was an obvious and dangerous attempt on the part of Democrats to steal the 2020 election. Trump said that Democrats were using the excuse of the coronavirus to put Americaon the path to a mail-in election – one that would give the left all the power they need to fudge the results using a variety of shady tools.
“Voter fraud is real and it is absolutely happening every single day,” Eric Trump warned. “And the Democrats don’t care. And the media wants to ignore it.”

As we see, Republicans are convinced they will lose elections if people have “mail-in voting.” It is apparent that Republicans are convinced they can’t manipulate the elections system if people can mail in their votes.
As we all have learned the only way Republicans can win elections is to cheat—and they are darn good at it.
So let’s stay on them and make it as hard as possible for them to win.

Campaign season and all that propaganda again

$

By SJ Otto
All week long I have been getting campaign literature from Republicans wanting both my vote and my money. For example, I got a slick big post card from Kris Kobach. He is vowing to confirm Constitutional Conservative to the Supreme Court. He also wants to:
  • Defend your 2nd amendment rights,
  • Protect lives of Unborn Children,
  • Roll Back unconstitutional regulations.
Of all of those, I do support the 2nd amendment, but I also support the first amendment and the fourth, all amendments that most of these conservatives don’t support.
Protecting the unborn means he opposes abortions. The odd thing about this is how much these conservatives don’t support such lives once they are born. They don’t support the rights of poor people to get healthcare. If a live dies after being born, conservatives here in Kansas just don’t care.
And when it comes to rolling back unconstitutional regulations, many of these conservatives are picky about “WHICH” unconstitutional regulations they want to roll back.
I received similar campaign fodder from Roger Marshal and a few others. All of them seem almost exactly the same. The same issues as we see above are the same issues all of them emphasize. It would seem originality is something that conservatives don’t value.
While I received one pamphlet from Kansasfor Life which endorsed Marshall, there was another pamphlet tearing him down, by another conservative group that accused him attacking a neighbor with his truck. It would seem this was put out by a rival conservative wanting to beat him in the primary. At times, Marshall had been portrayed as a liberal, which he clearly is not. I was registered as a Republican for a few years. That is because there were contested primaries while the Democrats did not have such primary races. I have never been conservative. But at times voting in the Republican primary was a tactic that made sense.
Now I get all their literature and propaganda. I also see their ads on TV. Everyone defends our president and acts as if it is unthinkable to criticize “our president.” If find it surprising that Republicans just assume every Republicans supports Donald Trump. There are some Republicans who don’t like him. But everyone running for office here in Kansas seems to think we all love Trump.
I have gotten quite a few invitations to support Trump, in my e-mail. My favorite is the Trump 100 Club. It sounds so elite. It sounds like I’m real sophisticated if I join this club.
Here are two examples, one from Eric and one from Lara:

Steve,

Where have you been?

Black Lives Matter May Be the Largest Movement in U.S. History—including here in Wichita

All across the country, the Black Lives Matter marches have kept up the momentum. As with other major cities, that has been the case here in Wichita. According to Larry BuchananQuoctrung Bui and Jugal K. Patel, of the New York Times, The Black lives matter movement may be the largest movement in US History. Here in Wichita, political activist are doing their part to make that possibility a reality. On July 11, Bill Anderson photographed a Black Lives Matter march that he took part in. As Bill Anderson said on his Facebook Page:

“Great group of people.” It was funny to see that a bunch of old, out of shape, maskless white racists came out to the courthouse to protect the statchews... they got punked... swallowed some bullshit rumors and just looked pathetic ignorant and foolish.”

Reports that Yoko Ono is wheelchair-bound—but still an active artist

By SJ Otto
For many years now, Yoko Ono has been one of my favorite celebrities. I have taken a lot of ideas and inspiration from her. She is politically progressive, even though she is more anti-violence that I am. And she was once married to one of my favorite musicians and song writers of all times, John Lennon. I have also had some contacts with her over the last 20 years. So I took an interest in her health and welfare recently from an article posted in theNew York Post:

“Three years ago, when the National Music Publishers’ Association presented Yoko Ono with their Centennial Song Award, Sean Lennon pushed his mother onto the stage at Cipriani 42nd Street in a wheelchair — shocking some who didn’t realize the formidable avant-garde artist was incapacitated.
But in her signature shades, black leather jacket and white Panama hat, the widow of John Lennon didn’t seem to miss a beat when she began a short acceptance speech by addressing the elephant in the room.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she said, clutching the award in one hand and a microphone in the other as Sean whispered to her about what was going on. “I’ve learned so much from having this illness. I’m thankful I went through that.”
While it’s not clear what “illness” she was referring to, Ono, now 87, is still ailing, requires round-the-clock care and rarely leaves her sprawling apartment in The Dakota, a source close to her staff told The Post. In photos taken at rare public appearances — including a women’s march in Columbus Circle last year and at a commemoration of John in Liverpool in May 2018 — Ono is confined to a wheelchair, or walks with great difficulty using a cane, often leaning on a caregiver or Sean for support.”

It is always hard to take, when we find out a friend, relative or someone we know is getting old and having a hard time getting around. But that happens. Our parents get old, as do our spouses brothers, sisters and friends. Getting old is a part of life. I can still remember pictures of John and Yoko together as they went to many places and got photographed going to all of those places they went.

It was a several years ago that I posted a comment on a site run by Yoko Ono. It was a site about her and John Lennon. I quoted a line from one of Lennon’s songs as a part of my book. I used it because I was inspired by Lennon. As it turns out, I believe Yoko found it moving and she has been following me on Twitterand later on Google+ (until its demise). I have also had exchanges in other social media, such as the now defunct MySpace. There were a few times when she sent me some invites to her art shows in New York and I used to get some articles/news tips about her future events, from her for my blogs.
So I have learned to really appreciate Yoko. She had been a performance artist and I have found a lot of her ideasto be very interesting and inspirational. For a time I was doing performance art at the local club, Kirby’s, here in Wichita.
And let’s face it—she was the wife of one of my favorite musicians of all times—John Lennon. From my high school days to long after he died I enjoyed Lennon’s music, his lyrics and his comments to the press. He was one of my favorite celebrities. Of course he died long before I could approach him on social media. So it was really cool that I found it possible to approach Yoko. She was his wife. They were close. They seemed to be married for life. I have heard from some sources that Lennon got more conservative before he died. I don’t know how true that is, but Yoko seems very progressive even today. She has been involved in political actions promoting peace, even in recent times. Last yearDWwrote this about Yoko:

“She is arguably the most hated woman in music history. Yet Yoko Ono is not only John Lennon's widow, she also stands alone as an artist. Her works spanning five decades are now on show in Leipzig.
***
YOKO ONO: ART AND PROTEST
The Yoko Ono myth
The Japanese-American conceptual artist was at some point considered "the most hated woman in America," since she was believed to have contributed to the break-up of the Beatles. Public appreciation of Ono's work has evolved over time. John Lennon's widow has not only preserved his legacy, she has also pursued her own innovative artistic career over the decades.
***
Yoko Ono has over 2,000 square meters (around 21,500 square feet) and three floors of exhibition space in the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts at her disposal. "Yoko Ono. Peace is Power" is the most extensive retrospective of the Japanese-American artist's work in Germanyto date. As curator, Ono's long-time friend and confidante Jon Hendricks has been on site to ensure that everything is set up in the spirit of the eccentric artist.

She has had a rich life and we are all better off because if it.

Ultra-right politicians come under attack from the far-far-far right

Today I received a campaign brochure in the mail. It was an attack on our conservative Republican US Senate Roger Marshall. I have no fondness for Marshall. But this brochure attacked him from the right, not the left. For example, it suggested that he supported the Rosie O’Donnell Summer Camp, a Global Warming Musical (with a picture of Al Gore) and he supposedly voted to fund “transgender plays.”
The ad calls him a “Fake Republican.” He supposedly “sided with Nancy Pelosi.”
For most of this stuff I could care less. I don’t get upset that a politician who was voted on by me and others supported gay plays or Transgender plays.  I’m not always in support of Nancy Pelosi, but my nostrils don’t flare up when I hear her name.
I really don’t believe that Marshall is a closet liberal or Democrat. The group responsible for this brochure is “Free Forever Pac, Not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee.” And for the record this was sent to “The Otto Household.” That includes only me. My wife never took my last name when we married. I have been registered as a Republican a few times, so that may explain why it was sent to me. There are a lot of other questions I have. I can assume by the tone of this brochure that it was meant to inflame the passions of a conservative person. I am not conservative. So I can’t tell who this is intended to help. It implies that Marshallis not really conservative. But that does not seem to be true at all. He is conservative and for that reason I have no reason to support him or vote for him. These accusations are not that easy to check on. They do give a few hyperlinks such as:

http.//congress.freedomworks.org/bills/house-concurrent-resolution-hcres-or- hconres-71?keyvote=11139

http.//freebeacon.com/culture/rosie-odonnells-theater-group-gets-30000-trump-administration/

But those provided little help in finding the source for this brochures’ accusation.
I don’t have any sympathy for Rogers. I would love to see him lose that seat. But not to an ultra-right politician and those are the people this brochure was intended to support.
Kansas politics have gotten nasty and unfortunately there are no decent people (that I am aware of) running who can benefit from the loss of such ass holes as Marshall.

AN OPEN LETTER TO REP. JOHN LEWIS

From the  South Lawn
An Open Letter to Representative Lewis,

Yesterday, you stated the following about Bernie Sanders’s record on fighting for civil rights in the 1960s:
“I never saw him. I never met him. I was chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee for three years, from 1963 to 1966. I was involved with the sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, the march from Selma to Montgomery and directed (the) voter education project for six years. But I met Hillary Clinton. I met President (Bill) Clinton.”
We are going to ignore the fact that Hillary Clinton was a Goldwater Girl, or that you once stated to a Clinton biographer that, “[t]he first time I ever heard of Bill Clinton was the 1970s”, or that it has already been well-established that Sanders worked with the Congress for Racial Equality (CORE) at the University of Chicago in the 1960s. We are also going to leave aside the fact that every mention of Bill Clinton in your book Walking With The Wind described an instance that he opposed some policy that you cherished.

Instead, we are going to talk about another person that you never saw or met.

Dorothy Marie Boone-Anderson was born in Gates County, North Carolinain 1935 as one of seven children. She left formal schooling in the eighth grade to go into the fields and work to support her family. Times were always hard for the Boones, and the lack of educational prospects for the family meant that times would always be hard. That was a legacy of a segregation that always kept Black families at the edge of the American Dream; close enough to be eternally tortured by a success that was constantly visible yet always elusive. In early 1953, Dorothy became pregnant by a man named Douglas Washington Williams. Her son, Luther, would be born on September 21, 1953.
It was the birth of my father that spurred my grandmother into organizing within the Civil Rights Movement, determined that her children would never have to live in a world where economic and political opportunities were denied to them because of their race. She organized alongside Haywood Riddick at the NansemondCountySNCC and organizations like the Wilroy Civic League, which acted as a locus for social and political activity in the neighborhood that they lived in. As I am sure you know, it made sense for them to focus on integrating the public school system. My father went to Wilroy School, an elementary school that was built with $900 from the Rosenwald Fund. This fund, set up by Sears and Roebuck executive Julius Rosenwald, was necessary to ensure that Black children received education in areas where the state refused to provide them. It stood as a testament to the disregard that the Commonwealth of Virginia showed to its most vulnerable populations.
The fight was long and hard, but in the fall of 1965, the Nansemond County School System finally integrated. The photo above shows my father (in the middle) and my grandmother (to his right) standing in front of Driver Elementary School, the first school in the county to be integrated. The 1970-1971 school year, my father’s senior year, would finally see all schools in the county integrated. He would graduate from JohnF.KennedyHigh School in Suffolk.
Presidential politics might be the backdrop for this story, Representative Lewis, but this has nothing to do with Bernie Sanders. The hurtful nature of your comments has to do with your erasure of the people who worked outside of the spotlight and the national press to make sure that the Civil Rights Movement touched every corner of Black America. As I said earlier, you did not know or meet my grandmother. Your lack of acquaintance with her does not counterfeit the work she put in, like it does not counterfeit the work of any other person you did not know and yet sought to bring to birth a better world than the one they came into.
The limited amount of freedom that we Black Americans enjoy today is due in large part to the rallies organized, the meals cooked, the plans conceived, and the bravery shown by organizers whose names we will never know. Believe it or not, our freedom was not won by the Big Six alone. When you use your history as a hero of the Movement to disparage others because you never personally knew them, it is a slap in the face to all those people who fought hard and never made it into the history books or into Congress. It is a slap in the face to people like my grandmother.
The movement that you, my grandmother, Senator Sanders, and countless thousands were a part of was the largest grassroots movement for social, political, and economic change that this country has ever seen. It was a movement that was bigger than any one participant in it. A movement that, at its best, was unapologetically radical and driven by the Black working class. We should live every moment in awe and praise of all of those people and not sweep them under the rug when it is politically expedient.
Hillary Clinton ain’t worth that. Not to me, and not to millions of others who owe everything to the Dorothy Marie Boone-Andersons of this world.
Sincerely,
Douglas William

Jefferson County, MO health board, protesters oppose mask mandate despite the rising death toll

When I see or read from people who refuse to wear masks I am amazed that people in this country can be so selfish and uncaring about other people. According to 5 On Your Side, a local TV station:

HILLSBORO, Mo.— The Jefferson County Health Department’s board of trustees pushed a vote on a possible mask mandate to next week following a heated debate inside the meeting and outside the building Tuesday.
On the same day Missouri hit a single-day record of new coronavirus cases, Jefferson County Health Department Director Kelley Vollmar suggested the board require masks as one strategy to limit the spread.”

Some of the reasons for opposing the mask mandate totally amazed me. For example:

"I'm not responsible for anybody's health, safety or well-being but my own, so I'm not wearing a mask,” Keith Fisher said.

This guy is so selfish he is willing to let other people die rather than put up with inconvenience of having to wear a mask. I have rarely seen such a selfish, self centered, personal greed as with him. He seems to have plenty of friends who share that kind of selfishness. These are the kind of ass holes that have stopped this country from having a national health care system. This is the only country in the industrialized world that doesn’t have a national health cares system. It is just about the only industrialized country that refuses to see health care as a human right. Our leaders, here in the US, bitch and bitch about human rights violations in Cubaand yet Cuba, a very poor country, provides health care for all its citizens, regardless of their ability to pay. Yet the US, the wealthiest country in the world, neglects the health care of its poorer citizens.
Day after day, the numbers of people getting this virus rises dramatically. So does the number of people dying from it. For a long time it seemed that only older people and those with certain health problems were likely to die from this virus. But lately most of the people getting this disease are younger folks. And younger folks with few noticeable health problems are dying from the coronavirus.
Just recently there have been young people who actually thought the coronavirus is a hoax. But some have found out the hard way that it is not. For example, from The New York Times:

“A 30-year-old man who believed the coronavirus was a hoax and attended a “Covid party” died after being infectedwith the virus, according to the chief medical officer at a Texas hospital.
The official, Dr. Jane Appleby of Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, said the man died after deliberately attending a gathering with an infected person to test whether the coronavirus was real.
In her statements to news organizations, Dr. Appleby said the man had told his nurse that he attended a Covid party. Just before he died, she said the patient told his nurse: “I think I made a mistake. I thought this was a hoax, but it’s not.”

This is the other half of the equation, people who just don’t seem to believe this disease is real. While such people are contributing to the spread of this virus, at least they are not deliberately being cold hearted against their fellow human beings.
I posted this article on my Facebook page and I got some interesting comments, so I decided to use them. Some interesting points were made, including the idea that these are often the kinds of people who are so religiously against abortion. Life is sacred before birth—notso sacred afterwards. So here are the comments:

I've got $100 saying they are prolife. Any takers?

Pro-life, pro-war and anti-masks ...

That's just south of St. Louiscounty. Anti maskers a a death cult. If they were just endangering themselves I would say "go for it assholes", but they aren't.

"I'm not responsible for anybody's health but my own."
"So a pregnant woman should be allowed an abortion to save her life?"…
“No.”

Trump wages war on peaceful protests—turning them into violent protests

We have for a president a man who has made it perfectly clear that he is a president for all the conservative rednecks in this country. Those who love the police—law and order—a reckless disregard for left-wing opinions—those are the people who love Donald Trump, our irresponsible president. One thing I can say about Trump. There is no middle ground—no sitting on the fence—you either hate him or love him. I hate him and that is easy to do.
Trump has nothing but contempt for people on the left. His recent action in Portlandspells that out. Trump has no tolerance for those who protest against the status quo. He is an authoritarian. He sees himself as a strongman and his actions, sending Federal agents into the streets of Portland, are not surprising. He seems determined to stamp out the “disorder” and any opposition to him. No other president, in recent history (except maybe Richard Nixon) has been such an authoritarian. He seems completely intolerant of anyone who crosses him.
It is not surprising that he has sent Federal agents into Portland. His excuse is that they are there to protect Federal property. That position is as phony as his leadership has been. There are reports of him having protesters arrested and held in secrecy. It is as if we are now living in a South American country where they used to have the so called “dirty wars.”
Now Portlandpolice have declared a riot as demonstrators have attacked a fence outside a federal courthouse.
According to Yahoo News:

Portland,…… has seen 58 straight days of protests sparked by the Black Lives Matter social justice movement and the Memorial Day death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolispolice.”

The Mayor of Portland, Ted Wheeler, a Democrat, has the good sense to oppose Trump. Unlike other local politicians, he does not have enough sense to want Trump to take the Federal agents out of his town.
In the past he has accused Trump of making the protesting and violence worse. I’m sure he is right. He was even tear gassed just recently. According to Wbur:

“The mayor of Portland, Oregon, was tear gassed by the U.S.government late Wednesday as he stood at a fence guarding a federal courthouse during another night of protest against the presence of federal agents sent by President Donald Trump to quell unrest in the city.
Mayor Ted Wheeler, a Democrat, said it was the first time he’d been tear gassed and appeared slightly dazed and coughed as he put on a pair of goggles someone handed him and drank water. He didn’t leave his spot at the front, however, and continued to take gas. Around Wheeler, the protest raged, with demonstrators lighting a large fire in the space between the fence and the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse and the pop-pop-pop of federal agents deploying tear gas and stun grenades into the crowd.”
Nothing Trump does is surprising. He is a despicable human being and probably just about the worst president we have had in nearly a century. In some ways we have seen the real essence of Trump. He is a disgusting tyrant and he has just about declared war on many decent Americans just for not bowing down to his right-wing authoritarianism.

Republicans want to throw COVID-19 victims to the wolves

People are about to run out of money (unemployment) and the Republicans want to cut that off. Supposedly continuing this money discourages people from working, they say. For many people there is no place to work. Most people want to work, but with the coronavirus keeping people from many jobs, such as working in bars, restaurants and a few other public places, there are fewer jobs available for people to take. The Democrats are seeking to extend the $600 assistance into next year, arguing it is necessary to help people who have lost their jobs. The Republicans want that reduced to $200. Two hundred in this economy is like nothing. It will do nothing to keep people afloat. Many people can’t pay their rent. Even with a job it will take many people time to catch up with their expenses and many people can’t pay their rent. Pulling that money out now is like pulling the rug out from under people.
Once again we see the cold-blooded and cold-hearted attitude that Republicans have towards working people. They simply don’t care if working people can make it or not in this time where the coronavirus has damaged both people’s health and the health of the economy. Trump and his ilk don’t care about the welfare of the people. They just care about themselves and their $millionaire and $billionaire buddies.

We used to have coins for the very poor. This money had little real value in its time. Today it would have none, accept that these coins are now rare and valuable.

Right-wing jerk tries to run protesters down in Wichita and waves a gun at them

Just last nighta group of protesters, here in Wichita, who were protesting in solidarity with the protesters in Portland, Oregon, where endangered by a pickup truck driver who drove through the crowd and nearly ran over some of the people. Then he pulled out a gun and threatened the protester even more. This has been happening more and more as the Black Lives Matter movement and other similar groups of people with similar causes are attacked, by right-wingers the country over.
That has happened also inMinneapolis, Minnesota,Tulsa, Oklahomaand a few other places.
On a personal note: I hate right-wing jerks that try and run us over and/or stick guns in our faces. I live to confront ass holes like that. I'm not a peace freak. I own a gun and can legally carry it on me, here in Kansas. Years ago I gave up running from people who try to walk all over me. I don't run from a fight. I've been avoiding the marches because I really can’t afford to get the coronavirus. That will almost certainly kill me, since I am 65 years old and I have diabetes. But now I’m considering attending these local rallies anyway. I can always take pictures from a distance of the marchers. If I get the opportunity to confront right-wing ass holes I will do it. I own a gun, as many leftists do and I can legally carry it in my pocket here in Wichita.

The following statement was released on Facebook, from Project Justice ICT:

Last night as we were marching down the street a white man in a Dodge Ram truck with a “Don’t Tread On Me” sticker on his front windshield intentionally ran into our protesters. After nightfall our numbers had dwindled by more than half to about 20 people, probably less, but still we continued our march around the Downtown Wichita area. As we were walking down Market near 2nd, we saw the man in the vehicle accelerate toward us before briefly tapping on his brakes right before he reached our crowd. He ended up clipping one of our signs/shields as he ran into us, which is the sound you hear on impact in the video (click on Project Justice ICT to see the video). A few of us, including myself, ran after the truck to try to get his plates. We were a good 40-50 feet away from him when he exited his vehicle and pointed his gun at us. We immediately stopped running toward him and put our hands up as he continued to point his gun. We were lucky enough that a fellow comrade was also armed, and drew his own firearm on the aggressor in defense of us. After the man saw our armed comrade, he returned to his vehicle and retreated. After triple checking to see that everyone was okay we continued marching with extra vigilance. The man in the truck returned, drove past us again and pointed his firearm at us again while most of us had our backs toward him. We are very lucky that no one was hit. We are very lucky that no one was shot. And we are very lucky that we had an armed comrade with us who was able to scare the threat away.
This IS Wichita. This is white supremacy. This is fascism. This is everything we are out here protesting. This is a wake up call for all of you who call yourselves BLM, antifascists, leftists, activists, and allies. This is not a game.
Over the past two days that we have been consistently protesting, there has not been one instance of any of our marchers instigating violence or aggression. Yet last night, a man was prepared to take our protesters’ lives without a second thought. And for what? Blocking the street? Chanting? Slowing his drive time by 30 seconds? Standing in solidarity with protesters in Portland?
We must be prepared. We must be vigilant. We must be ready to defend and protect each other in the face of violence and aggression. We are no longer willing to take chances.
Tonight we will protest for our third night in a row, and it will not be our last night in a row. We hope that you will stand with us against the fascist violence which desires our permanent silence. Come even more prepared. Bring a shield. Bring protective gear. Dress in Black Block. Cover your face, hair, and any distinguishable tattoos and features. We will meet at Century 2 at 7PM.
If you have a bike please bring it and show up early, or if you are a medic please show up early. 6:30 PM.
*******
I think we have to consider the possibilities that right-wing ass holes are ready to declare war on us. If so, we need to answer the call. Many of us on the left have guns. We are armed. Maybe the right-wingers are so stupid they think everyone on the left hates guns and refuses to use them. They will find they are wrong and that is THEIR problem.
Some members of Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) have told me they are concerned that people on the right tend to be more likely to be armed. They told me that many Liberals tend to support gun control and many oppose using guns. They were concerned that so many people on the left have allowed the right-wingers to arm themselves and most of the guns in Americaare in the hands of right-wingers. –SJ Otto

Backward conservatives & centrists won’t give up on capital punishment in the US

This Sunday, as I read my weekend Wichita Eagle, I learned that the Trump Administration has dropped its insistence that two British ISIS (Islamic State) captives be turned over to the US for execution. The article is called “Barr may drop insistence on death penalty for ISISduo.”[1]For me, this article is one more piece of evidence that President Donald Trump and Republicans in general, love to kill criminals, terrorists and others that they would like to see eradicated from our society.

Killing people has always been a way of dealing with criminals and traitors to this country. Conservative people, including many centrist Democrats, love to kill people. The European nations have all done away with executing people. They have adopted the idea that such punishment violates human rights and has no place in a civilized society. But the USclings to the past. This last Summer I went on a trip to Cuba and found that they quit executing people in the last 15 years or so. The Sandinistas abolished capital punishment when the won their revolution in 1979.[2] At that same time, the Ronald Reagan Regime, which was accusing Nicaragua of violating human rights, was expanding executions.

It becomes more and more evident, over time, that the US is not the nation moving towards a more humane and progressive society. The US is one of the most backward, anti-human rights and anti-progressive nation in the world today.

Wichita is not a free place for Marching- Project Justice ICT

It is sad that a city as Wichita can’t tolerate simple dissent. For some time a group calling itself Project Justice ICT have been conducting marches. They have been having those marches regularly. In the last few days the Wichita Police have had leaders and members of this under surveillance. Just a few days ago, two people were arrested. Despite all the publicity the city police has gained from arresting members of this group, they have not released the names of these people.

For the most part, Project Justice ICT is about Black Lives Matter and Defunding the Wichita Police Department. The last marches they held were in solidarity with the protesters inPortland Oregon.

Just recently there were arguments by right-wing people on Facebook against the idea that Wichita is a fascist state. They, as many middle of the road people have said, claim that calling this city fascist is ridiculous and there is no reason to call Wichitathat. But this is a city that has shown it does not respect the beliefs and actions of those who protest the policies of this city.

***IMPORTANT INFORMATION. PLEASE READ***

A letter to The People,

Over the course of the last two-and-a-half weeks, Project Justice has seen the Wichita community come together like never before. We started this movement in order to give direction and focus to the protests we saw in our streets, with the hope of creating concrete and radical change to the way policing is done in Wichita, the state of Kansas, and the United Statesas a whole. Since Monday, June 1st when we first came together, we have listened carefully to the concerns of the Wichitacommunity and have paid attention to the state of affairs as protests continue throughout America.

The debate around policing in this country goes far deeper than just mere questions of which reform policies to implement. In fact, the greater question is should we reform the police, or should we seek out a world in which policing is no longer necessary? Indeed, in a country where some 800,000 people are employed as officers of the law, where The Police and The Prison are made into award-winning comedy spectacles, and whose prison population outmatches that of the whole populations of many nations throughout the world, a United Stateswithout police is almost impossible to imagine. But it is simply that: almost impossible. In Wichitaalone, $98 million in City funding goes to the Wichita Police Department, yet social services such as public transportation, homelessness assistance, childcare programs, and drug and alcohol treatment are starkly underfunded comparatively. The people who crowd our prisons are largely people who have been touched by poverty in some way. They are people whose school teachers and principals told them they were no longer worth the effort. They are people who have faced addiction and homelessness. They are people who have had to choose between thievery and hunger. They are people; and they are people who were failed so fully by society as to believe they had no alternative but to turn to crime to survive. But what if that $98 million was used to house and employ the homeless in our community? What if that $98 million was used to treat those affected by the disease of addiction? What if that $98 million, rather than being used to fund a force that criminalizes our society’s “undesirables” – the homeless, the poor, the failed and forgotten – was used to keep them from ever having to be incriminated in the first place?

We have asked ourselves is reform enough? Can a system built from the remains of runaway slave patrols – and which continues to disproportionately incriminate, imprison, and disenfranchise our communities of color – truly be changed? Are we challenging the notion that police increase safety in our communities when we have so often seen that they do not? We have already passed laws that require body cameras, yet somehow body camera footage during fatal interactions with police winds up indiscernible, erased, or was simply never recorded. We have instituted policies that ban chokeholds and strangleholds, yet somehow police officers choke and strangle people in the streets to their deaths. We have changed the law to illegalize racial profiling, yet somehow in a country where Black and Latino people make up only a combined 25% of the population, Black and Latino people make up 77% of fatal police shootings.

As we have watched, waited, read, and listened, Project Justice has determined that mere reform policies are not enough to address the systemic issues that plague police forces around this country, and indeed, our own police force here in Wichita. We have taken time, we have educated ourselves, and we are prepared now more than ever to choose real change over mere reforms. We ask that those of you who have stood by us as we promoted reform please do not discount our altered views, but rather engage with us, educate yourselves, and hopefully continue to stand by us as we fight for real, radical change.

In solidarity,

Project Justice ICT

Surveillance and arresting leaders for illegal assembly, is something we can not tolerate in this town. We need to oppose this and pressure the Wichita City Councils to respect the political rights of protesters in this town. We have been told that the city plans to increase spending on the police department while they plan to cut spending in most other departments. Much of the spending is because of the coronavirus pandemic. They have even considered cutting the spending that allows people to put stray cats and dogs in the local animal shelter. Without a dog pound, where will people send these lost animals?SJ Otto

Progressives make gains in this primary season—conservative politics take a hit

$

 By SJ Otto

This primary season has provided progressives with some real good new. Progressive candidates have knocked out several conservative and/or centrist democrats. It is these little races, not the presidential race, that will lead the way to finally make some progress in one of the most conservative and backward countries in the world.

We can expect little or no real progress from Joe Biden, the Democrat that holds a good chance of replacing President Donald Trump, possibly one of the worst presidents in the last 100 years. He needs to win, but he won’t support any progressive causes. He has laughed at the idea of a national health care system to provides all people with health care. That is badly needed for many people who are going without health care.

U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib, one of the most visible and vulnerable progressive Democrats in Congress, won a challenge from the more conservative Democrats Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones. All the members of the so called Squad have been targeted by the more conservative factions of the Democratic Party.

Just a little over a month ago Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, possibly the most visible of the Squad, won her primary re-election by a landslide. Her opponent was Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, a former journalist and former republican. AOC obtained 72.6 percent of the votes.

Other wins for new progressives include Neomi Martinez-Parra who won Senate District 35, defeating state Senator Sen. John Arthur Smith who has held the seat for 32 years, in New Mexico. Another progressive win was also in New Mexico. Carrie Hamblen, running for Senate District 38, also defeated another powerful state Senate voice, 20-year-state Senate veteran Mary Kay Papen, who is President Pro Tem.

Another primary win for progressives was in Missouri where Cori Bush defeated William Lacy Clay, who was elected in 2000, after entering politics in 2014 amid protests over the shooting of Michael Brown.

All these candidates have to win in the November election. Many are in traditional Democratic districts. Others are less sure to win, such as in Missouri—a state that has gone to the Republicans many years ago.

An article in The Hill provided names of other important races to progressives. For example:

“Those elections may be a preview of the rest of the primary season, when long-serving Democrats find themselves the targets of well-organized campaigns to oust them. On Tuesday, voters head to the polls in New York, where at least two veteran lawmakers — Reps. Eliot Engel (D) and Yvette Clarke (D) — face serious threats from progressive rivals…..

….At least four Pennsylvania Democratic state legislators lost their seats in last week's primary. Two of the winning challengers in the Philadelphia area scored endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). In Pittsburgh, Emily Kinkead, a progressive making her first run for office, ousted state Rep. Adam Ravenstahl (D), the brother of the city's former mayor……

….The wins for progressive candidates come two years after the first round of Sanders-supporting candidates such as Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) came to prominence by ousting incumbents or establishment-backed rivals. Progressives claimed sweeping wins in Boston in 2019, when for the first time a majority of the City Council was made up of nonwhites and women….”

The article went on to explain the changes that have taken place in the country that have made it possible for these progressive wins:

“Surveys show the millennial generation is more liberal than preceding generations, and as it moves into early middle age, it is accounting for a larger slice of the electorate — especially in larger cities, which have disproportionate numbers of millennial voters.”

After decades of being clobbered by right-wing conservative Republicans and centrist Democrats who acted more like Republicans than the slightly progressive leaders the Party used to produce in the 1960s, we finally have a change to actually change this country. We may finally be able to turn back the disastrous changes that came, starting with President Ronald Reagan. We have been stuck in a rut, run by the far-far-far-far right—which as been moving continuously to the right—further and further. Commentators love to say that the baby boomer generation has gotten more conservative. Not all of us are more conservative. I am one of the many baby boomers who have been progressive and out-voted election after election, since the Reagan years. Finally after all theses years we may change this country into a more tolerable place for us to live in.

We haven’t had a seriously progressive Democratic president since Franklin Roosevelt. Lyndon Johnson was the last actual liberal president and he was deeply anti-communist. His anti-communism wrecked his foreign policy and had a bad affect on local politics as well. For most of the last century there really hasn’t been a lot of difference between the two parties. Finally we have a chance to change that.
