Gowdy: That scheming Hillary caused our public humiliation

From Daily Kos:
TREY GOWDY:
Well, Chuck it was a voluntary interview. I didn't send the subpoena to Secretary Clinton. It was a voluntary interview, and she wanted it to be in public. I wrote a letter several months ago giving her an option. And she chose public. And that's well within her right.
I can just tell you that of the 50-some odd interviews we have done thus far, the vast majority of them have been private. And you don't see the bickering among the members of Congress and private interviews. You don't see any of that. So the venue that is most constructive--
Given Gowdy's committee's history of selective out-of-context leaks and irrelevant questions (see: Blumenthal, Sidney), of course they want to do this shit in secret! Just last week we saw what happens when the light of day is shined on their proceedings: A jumbled mess of conspiracy theories, irrelevant tangents, and politically-motivated attacks.

City wants to privatize water- local activist want to stop it

The city of Wichitaand what is left of its water department are considering privatizing the city's water operations. This goes along with the far-right philosophy of our local and state politicians to privatize or outsource almost all the government's functions. The idea is that profiteers are able to run a system more efficiently than a public entity. This also goes along with the right-wing mantra that we should have as little government as possible—that it is some how evil to rely on the government for anything.
In this warped philosophy local and state governments are trying to outsource work to parasitic profiteers. These parasites not only run this entity, they have the right to take out a large cut for themselves. It will actually cost us more taxes because the water company profiteers expect to profit from their work.
"We came into working on this issue because of fear of water privatization and in particular, the reputation of Veolia.  After a little over three months, we are still involved, now over fear of a brand-new form of privatization (not selling but eventual management and operation) and the reputation and profit motivation of the contracted company, CH2M Hill," according to Janice Bradley, Doug Ballard and Laura Tillem, who have been involved in this issue.
So far this group of people have determined that the city has a project that will be broken up into two phases. The first phase is expected to last up to one year and will set the stage for the second phase. During Phase 1, the selected firm will analyze existing asset, revenue, and staffing conditions to determine ways to optimize the utilities. It will also line up new sources of capital funding to secure better financing terms with the City. A new management model will be developed to create a long-term partnership with the selected firm. As Phase 1 draws to a close, the City would negotiate exclusively with the selected firm to enter into Phase 2. The second phase is expected to be a long-term arrangement that could span approximately ten years. In Phase 2 the City would partner with the selected firm to jointly manage the utilities and implement the plans set forth in the first phase.
This is just the beginning of a campaign to stop privatization and outsourcing of the operations of Wichita's utilities. A number of people, here in town, including members of the Peace and Social Justice Center of South Central Kansas are working hard to prevent this from happening.
Privatization does not work. It is not more efficient. Governor Sam Brownback has set up three companies to run the new  KanCare, privatized Kansas Medicaid system and it has been a failure. The three companies have posted losses of $ 110 million in the fist year. We don't need this kind of ideological waist based on obsolete right-wing ideology.
Those activists opposed to this move will attend a meeting at the City District Advisory Boards (DAB) to speak Monday, Nov 2, 6:30 pm.

Koch brothers protested — while the rest of the city "bends over" for them

After a week of being treated as savoir on par with Jesus Christ himself, about 11 people took the time to protest Charles Koch, one of the notorious Koch brothers, as he addressed the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerceat Century II on Monday Night.
"We want an alternative message," said Mary Ware, one of the protesters.  "There was a lovely big article in The (Wichita Eagle) paper. there is more to the story."
She was referring to more than an entire page article on Charles Koch, provided in The Wichita Eagle newspaper. That paper gives the Koch brothers lots of lavish praise, every so often, to these men who like to buy up our democracy.
"I take every opportunity to educate people," said Tom James, another protester. "They want to buy our democracy."
Koch was the guest of honour at the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce, Monday Night.
Charles Koch, along with his brother David are billionaires known for their grooming candidates and giving them millions so their people can get elected and push the Koch brothers brand of conservatives, a philosophy that lets them pollute the environment, deny the existence of climate change and destroy unions and all the writes working people presently have.
The protest was small and that was really unfortunate. A lot of people are offended by what the Koch brothers are doing to this entire country and yet 11 people was all they could muster for a protest.
The Kochs own Wichita and like a cat that pies to mark its territory the Kochs have their names on building everywhere Koch Community Plaza, Koch Scouting Center, and the Koch Orangutan and Chimpanzee Habitat at the Sedgwick County Zoo. They have their name on the KochAquaticCenter at the North Branch Y.M.C.A., and there is the PlainsNatureCenter’s Koch Habitat Hall. Don't forget the Henry Levitt  Arena, which is now called the Koch Arena.
Wichita truly is the Koch's personal whore.

The new religious freedom law creates the perfect job — Just do nothing!

I just talked to a fiend of mine, Red Rob Blogger, and he has a great idea for his perfect job. He will work in a liquor store. He will get the job and then wait until they pass the new "freedom of religion act," here in Kansas, to protect his religious beliefs.
You see Red Rob has been looking for job here he has to do nothing all day. That way he can just read books and relax while getting a pay check.
"So here is the plan," Red Rob told me. "Fist I get accepted to do the job. Then I tell them I just joined the Southern Baptists and they do not believe in alcohol use at all. Because of this new religion protection law, Kansas Preservation of Religious Freedom Act; HB 2203, they can't fire me for refusing to sell liquor to the public."
"Wait a minute," I protested. "It's a liquor store. Here in Kansas all you can sell is liquor in a liquor store. That's it."
"Actually, they do sell ice," he insisted. "It is kept out side. Besides, they will have to pay me to mind their stores. I just won't have to sell anything because they my religion prevents me from selling alcohol. I can just sit there all day and read books or listen to my music. If someone comes in to buy ice....fine. But that is all I will sell them. My religion has released this following tract:"

On Alcohol Use In America
Greensboro, NC - 2006
WHEREAS, Years of research confirm biblical warnings that alcohol use leads to physical, mental, and emotional damage (e.g., Proverbs 23:29-35); and

WHEREAS, Alcohol use has led to countless injuries and deaths on our nation's highways; and

WHEREAS, The breakup of families and homes can be directly and indirectly attributed to alcohol use by one or more members of a family; and

WHEREAS, The use of alcohol as a recreational beverage has been shown to lead individuals down a path of addiction to alcohol and toward the use of other kinds of drugs, both legal and illegal; and

WHEREAS, There are some religious leaders who are now advocating the consumption of alcoholic beverages based on a misinterpretation of the doctrine of "our freedom in Christ"; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina, June 13-14, 2006, express our total opposition to the manufacturing, advertising, distributing, and consuming of alcoholic beverages; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge that no one be elected to serve as a trustee or member of any entity or committee of the Southern Baptist Convention that is a user of alcoholic beverages.

RESOLVED, That we urge Southern Baptists to take an active role in supporting legislation that is intended to curb alcohol use in our communities and nation; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge Southern Baptists to be actively involved in educating students and adults concerning the destructive nature of alcoholic beverages; and be it finally

RESOLVED, That we commend organizations and ministries that treat alcohol-related problems from a biblical perspective and promote abstinence and encourage local churches to begin and/or support such biblically-based ministries.

"But all you can sell is alcohol,"I said. "That is cheating them. They paid you to sell their product and you're saying you won't sell it. Isn't that stealing?"
"Not with this new law," Red Rob said. "If I'm Jewish they can't make me sell pork. If I'm an evangelical, I can't sell birth control. The customer can get mad and go else where, but what are the employers going to do? They can't violate the law and that will be the law."
Well, he had me there. Kim Davis doesn't have to serve homosexuals getting married even though that IS here job. She doesn't have to do here job at all and that is religious freedom. And many politicians are supporting her.
So eventually Red Rob's plan will work. People across the country will get jobs they really don't have to do because of their religious freedom. This is great...that perfect job where you sit on your ass and do nothing is just ahead of our grasp.

University protests — Not everyone wants to "bend over" for the Koch brothers

$

Last week we had a protest against Charles Koch who met with the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce to promote his newest book, Good Profit. The protesters numbered only 11. They were a dedicated group of political activists here in town, while much of the town treated Charles as royalty.
Opponents of the Kochs are having better luck protesting the brothers so called "financial gifts" to Universities. These gifts and grants end up allowing the Kochs to censor political activities they don't believe in. Students also don't want so much corporate influence on their campuses.

We must support and champion students everywhere who want to curb the influence of the Koch brothers as they try to buy up democracy and lock out those they disagree with. And let's not "bend over" for the Kochs.

According to Inside Higher Ed:

'UnKoch My Campus'

Student groups around the country, led by FloridaStateUniversity students, protest corporate money and influence in academics, with a focus on the Koch brothers.
November 4, 2014

By

Students on nearly 30 campuses around the country called for a separation of college and corporation in protests Monday. Although the events highlighted financial influence from the Koch brothers, organizers said the campaign is a response to a broader trend of corporate influence.
The idea was spearheaded by students at FloridaStateUniversity, where past criticisms over the university’s relationship with the Charles Koch Foundation are now intertwined with criticism of choice of a politician without an academic background for university president.
Outside of Florida, students at colleges from Michigan to Virginiaalso took steps Monday against their respective colleges' relationship with the Koch brothers.
Libertarian billionaires Charles and David Koch have been funneling millions of dollars to universities for several years, generally paying for the hiring of new faculty members and supporting economic centers that focus on capitalism and free enterprise. Critics say that some of the arrangement go beyond philanthropy to influencing curricular or hiring choices in inappropriate ways that colleges should reject.
Groups affiliated with the Koch brothers foundations have repeatedly denied that financial support of colleges infringes on academic freedom and did so when asked for a comment on Monday's campaign.
“Academic freedom and the free exchange of ideas are cornerstones of our philanthropy," said John Hardin, a program officer with the Charles Koch Foundation, in an email. "When we support a school’s initiative, it is to expand opportunity and increase the diversity of ideas available on campus.”
A recently launched “UnKoch My Campus” campaign helped advertise for Monday's events, which aimed to raise awareness on campuses that receive money tied to the Koch brothers and to unite already-existing protests on individual campuses.
Florida State's history with the Kochs
Florida State’s saga with Koch brothers started in 2011, when the details of a 2008 grant agreement between the university and the foundation were made public.
Critics of the agreement said it gave the Koch brothers too much influence in hiring in the economics department. The university revised the agreement in 2013, though that did little to assuage concerns.

Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live?!

By SJ Otto
Donald Trump has a lot of faults, but he may be the best thing the Republicans can muster for a presidential candidate. After all, Trump himself said that Ben Carson'can't really get rid of Medicare.' Trump says what he thinks and doesn't sugar coat things. Good president?? Maybe not. But the other diabolical sleaze bags may be worse.
Here he is on Saturday Night Live:

Now for a New York Times review:

Donald Trump’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live” last weekend was memorable for a few things, none having much to do with his comedic skills.
In fact, as reviewers parsed over his appearance, it was strange to note how a man who has been the source of so much comedy this political season only seems to make people laugh when he’s at his most serious.
Joe Berkowitz wrote on Vulture: “After watching this epic miscalculation, though, it’s clear that nobody wins; not Trump, not the show, and certainly not us.”

Reaction to Paris attacks—and probable over-reaction

$

This is the biggest terrorist attack since 9/11. No doubt that this attack will inspire the same things to happen in Francethat had happened in The US after 9/11.
1. This is a very difficult time to be a Muslim of any kind. Muslims were hunted down and attacked heavily after 9/11. Individuals wearing Muslim garb were sometimes hit by cars, by irate drivers or attacked on streets. There were even some non-Muslims attacked for clothes that resembled Muslim garb. Some people get mad and don't the time to realize that this is the work of just ONE faction of Muslims and a political faction as well. Some people are just hot heads and react without thinking.
2. Expect a huge increase in jingoism, ultra-patriotism and all out support for reckless imperialist action. In other words "for god sakes, do something- anything." The French Government is sure to take some kind of revenge action and it is safe to bet it will be reckless action.
3. There will be an increase of intolerance of all kinds. Pundits in the US said, after 9/11, "There is no need to understand our enemies. The US is right, western values need defending and that is the end of it." Anyone one dares to speak badly of the French Government, or that society, is sure to find themselves in some kind of hot water.

For example: Discourse on No Discourse 9/11:

"Western Intellectuals and Muslim Intellectuals The event1 of 9/11 was, no doubt, shocking, utterly unexpected and thought provoking. It not only aroused emotional reaction, but also intellectual response, both among Western intellectuals and Muslim intellectuals. But since the terrorist activity on the Twin Towers was launched by alQaeda which is associated with Islam and the Muslim world, the intellectual discourse has become centralized in the context of the West versus Islam as displayed by 9/11 and how both should prevent such terror to humans and humanity from happening again in the future. There is much written in newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals, and relayed on radio and television, but most of it is simply news items, information as to its happening and its aftermath. On the other hand, some serious intellectuals in the West as well as in the Muslim world have expressed their thoughts on the subject deeply but unfortunately, their discourse instead of dealing with its cause and why it occurred, is confined to dealing with the issue from within their own perspectives and cultural framework without addressing the concerns of the other. As a result, their discourse leads nowhere and with no results whatsoever. It is really no discourse and, hence, the title of this article ―A Discourse on No Discourse 9/11."

If there will be any good to come from this it is hard to see what it will be. Right-wing scum of every type will crawl out from under their rocks and try to carve themselves a piece of political spoils.  We saw that on 9/11.

Actions to prevent reckless and dangerous response in reaction to Paris attacks

I received this from Credo Action:
Petition to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry:
"As we stand with the victims of horrific violence in Paris, Beirut and elsewhere in the world, we urge you to reject hate directed towards Muslims, resist pressure for increased militarization, and show compassion by immediately expanding the number of refugees the United States will accept."
The horrific events last week in Paris and Beirut,1 where 169 men, women and children were indiscriminately killed, are difficult to comprehend. We stand with the victims, their families, and the people of Paris and Beirut.
We also stand in solidarity with those who are most likely to become the victims of backlash and violence over the coming weeks – Muslims in France and the rest of the world, including the millions of refugees fleeing Syria, Yemen and other countries to escape the same violence and hate that destroyed so many lives in Beirut and Paris.
Terrorists act to divide us, to stoke fear, and amplify hate. They aim to break our bonds of humanity. We cannot give in to fear.
The extreme right-wing immediately reacted to the horrific violence in Paris by attacking immigrants and by ratcheting up militaristic rhetoric.2Republican politicians, including presidential candidates Ben Carson, Donald Trump, and Sen. Ted Cruz pounced in support of the right-wing’s xenophobic push to let fear close our borders rather than open our arms.3
Within hours of the Paris attacks, Sen. Cruz even seemed ready to justify the killing of civilians in the name of fighting terror when he said: “[Our enemy] will not be deterred by targeted airstrikes with zero tolerance for civilian casualties, when the terrorists have such utter disregard for innocent life.”4
We need to push back hard against the right-wing leaders and media elites who want to blame refugees, the overwhelming majority of whom are innocent civilians seeking to escape terrible violence and bloodshed.
And, we must stop fueling the cycle of violence with reactive military force, which will only lead to increased radicalization and more deadly attacks. It is important to remember that it was the use of U.S. military force in Iraq that destabilized the region and created the environment that helped ISIS thrive in the first place.
As noted in a compelling column in Rolling Stone:
We've bombed hospitals and weddings. We've killed children with drones. If those are the only responses we can muster to terrorism, we will create generation after generation of people who want to strike back. That doesn't make us responsible for attacks against us; only those who carry them out bear that responsibility.
Our responsibility is to be better than the terrorists, and to show those who might be seduced by their hatred that the world isn't narrow and ugly. Closing off our borders to terrorized refugees sends exactly the wrong message.5
Over 7.5 million refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and elsewhere have left their homes, fleeing violence to protect their families. When they arrive on U.S. shores, they are often turned away.6 Currently, the U.S. is planning to accept only 70,000 refugees for the fiscal year of 2015.7 But the U.S. must do significantly more for the sake of peace and America’s long term interests.8
At CREDO, we reject the politics of hate and fear, and condemn those who peddle it; we reject any attempts to demonize Muslim, Arab or South Asian communities; and we reject any efforts to use the tragedies in Paris and Beirut to justify deportations, the suspension of civil rights, or the closure of our borders. We call on President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry to stand with us.
Please join us in making clear to President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry that Americans want them to reject hate, resist calls for a militaristic response and show compassion by immediately expanding the number of refugees the United States will accept.

Muslims face threats of violence, harassment in wake of Paris attacks

As we have all guessed, the nasty bigots who hate anything they don't fully understand have been out trying to confront their evil enemies, the Muslims. Of course many of us who do not hate Muslims will defend their right to practice their religion in the USA. Here is a bit from Yahoo News and a video.
-SJ Otto

As Friday's deadly terror attacks in Paris unfolded, Muslims around the world reacted in horror — and braced for threats, harassment and violence at home.
On Saturday night, a fire broke out at a mosque in Ontario. No one was in it at the time, and despite the fact that fire officials there ruled the blaze an act of arson, the president of the local Muslim association believes it was “clearly a hate crime.”
Earlier in the day, a mosque in St. Petersburg, Fla., reported it received a voicemail that threatened to "firebomb you and shoot whoever is there in the head."

Another Black Friday- Oh gee wiz - 2015

By SJ Otto
It's that time a year again. That is Black Friday. It is the one holiday of the holiday season the sums up American consumerism, capitalism and unadulterated greed. People spend hours in a line waiting for doors to open, then run into stores to wreck havoc and fight over junk they want to buy.
It's hard to see what this day really has in common with Christmas. Some may be trying to buy gifts for their friends and relatives, but they are trying to save money and that is where the real greed kicks in. They are trying to give expensive gifts on the cheap.
Some people really like this day. They like the crowds, they like the adventure. But it doesn't really seem that much about charity and giving. That is what the fictional character Scrooge, of the short story  A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, was suppose to learn about Christmas....kindness, mercy and giving. four spirits taught Scrooge about those things. That lesson does not seem to be a part of people's lives today. Consumer society promotes expensive and trendy gifts. Retailers insist they must make a lot of money to keep their profits up. Christmas does have its "bell ringers" and other types of charity. But that is drowned out by consumers, commercialism and the quest for massive profits, from our corporate masters.
This year, as with past years, I will stay home on Black Friday, relax, drink a beer and watch my favorite TV shows. I will stay far away from the stores.

Local Republican Party Hack Peterjohn shows anti-Muslim ugliness

By SJ Otto

While we see cowardly politicians across the US, pulling back from this countries commitments to take in Syrian refugees, we also have an example of that mean spiritedness here in Wichita, KS and Sedgwick Country.
The Wichita Eagle has reported on comments by Sedgwick County Commissioner Karl Peterjohn warning citizens to “be prepared” against the imminent “Islamist threat.” The county commissioners also passed a resolution condemning the ISIS attacks on Paris and Russia
Peterjohn showed a slide show depicting criminals and terrorists who use the name Muhammad. This is in step nation-wide with many politicians and pundits across the country who want to lump all Muslims together and treat them all as terrorists and potential terrorists.
The Islamic Society of Wichita gave some statements on its website:

“I think they [Peterjohn’s comments] are very inflammatory,” said Madi. “And I think we should educate the public about who the Muslims are. A lot of Americans are Muslisms. They serve in this city, and along the United States, all over, in every state and every city, [they] are doctors, highly educated people....
We condemn this horrific attack in the strongest terms possible. Such inexcusable acts of violence must be repudiated by Americans of all faiths and backgrounds. The American Muslim community stands shoulder to shoulder with our fellow citizens in offering condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured and in rejecting anyone who would harm the humanity safety and security. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families impacted by this tragedy.”

There is nothing surprising about Perterjohn's rant. The Republican Party members have been saying such things since the attacks in Paris. He is local so we can approach him and confront him locally about this.

Why I am a Socialist

$
0
0
By Helen Keller

For several months my name and socialism have appeared often together in the newspapers. A friend tells me that I have shared the front pages with baseball, Mr. Roosevelt and the New York police scandal. The association does not make me altogether happy but, on the whole, I am glad that many people are interested in me and in the educational achievements of my teacher, Mrs. Macy (Anne Sullivan).

Even notoriety may be turned to beneficent uses, and I rejoice if the disposition of the newspapers to record my activities results in bringing more often into their columns the word Socialism. In the future I hope to write about socialism, and to justify in some measure the great amount of publicity which has been accorded to me and my opinions.

So far I have written little and said little about the subject. I have written a few letters, notably one to Comrade Fred Warren which was printed in the Appeal to Reason. I have talked to some reporters, on of whom, Mr. Ireland of the New York World, made a very flattering report and gave fully and fairly what I said. I have never been in Schenectady.

I have never met Mayor Lunn. I have never had a letter from him, but he has sent kind messages to me through Mr. Macy. Owing to Mrs. Macy's illness, whatever plans I had to join the workers in Schenectady have been abandoned
.
On such negative and relatively insignificant matters have been written many editorials in the capitalist press and in the Socialist press. The clippings fill a drawer. I have not read a quarter of them, and I doubt if I shall ever read them all.

If on such a small quantity of fact so much comment has followed, what will the newspapers do if I ever set to work in earnest to write and talk in behalf of socialism? For the present I should like to make a statement of my position and correct some false reports and answer some criticisms which seem to me unjust.

First — How did I become a Socialist?

By reading.

The first book I read was Wells'New World for Old. I read it on Mrs. Macy's recommendation. She was attracted by its imaginative quality, and hoped that its electric style might stimulate and interest me. When she gave me the book, she was not a Socialist and she is not a Socialist now. Perhaps she will be one before Mr. Macy and I are done arguing with her.

My reading has been limited and slow. I take German bimonthly Socialist periodicals printed in braille for the blind. (Our German comrades are ahead of us in many respects.) I have also in German braille Kautsky's discussion of the Erfurt Program.

The other socialist literature that I have read has been spelled into my hand by a friend who comes three times a week to read to me whatever I choose to have read. The periodical which I have most often requested her lively fingers to communicate to my eager ones is the National Socialist.

She gives the titles of the articles and I tell her when to read on and when to omit. I have also had her read to me from the International Socialist Review articles the titles of which sounded promising. Manual spelling takes time. It is no easy and rapid thing to absorb through one's fingers a book of 50,000 words on economics. But it is a pleasure, and one which I shall enjoy repeatedly until I have made myself acquainted with all the classic socialist authors.

In the light of the foregoing I wish to comment on a piece about me which was printed in the Common Cause and reprinted in the Live Issue, two antisocialist publications. Here is a quotation from that piece:

"For twenty-five years Miss Keller's teacher and constant companion has been Mrs. John Macy, formerly of Wrentham, Mass. Both Mr. and Mrs. Macy are enthusiastic Marxist propagandists, and it is scarcely surprising that Miss Keller, depending upon this lifelong friend for her most intimate knowledge of life, should have imbibed such opinions."

Mr. Macy may be an enthusiastic Marxist propagandist, though I am sorry to say he has not shown much enthusiasm in propagating his Marxism through my fingers. Mrs. Macy is not a Marxist, nor a socialist. Therefore what the Common Cause says about her is not true.

The editor must have invented that, made it out of whole cloth, and if that is the way his mind works, it is no wonder that he is opposed to socialism. He has not sufficient sense of fact to be a socialist or anything else intellectually worthwhile.

Consider another quotation from the same article. The headline reads:

"SCHENECTADY REDS ARE ADVERTISING; USING HELEN KELLER, THE BLIND GIRL, TO RECEIVE PUBLICITY."

Then the article begins:

"It would be difficult to imagine anything more pathetic than the present exploitation of poor Helen Keller by the Socialists of Schenectady. For weeks the party's press agencies have heralded the fact that she is a Socialist, and is about to become a member of Schenectady's new Board of Public Welfare."

There's a chance for satirical comment on the phrase, "the exploitation of poor Helen Keller."

But I will refrain, simply saying that I do not like the hypocritical sympathy of such a paper as the Common Cause, but I am glad if it knows what the word "exploitation" means.

Let us come to the facts. When Mayor Lunn heard that I might go to Schenectady he proposed to the Board of Public Welfare that a place be kept on it for me.

Nothing was printed about this in The Citizen, Mayor Lunn's paper. Indeed, it was the intention of the board to say nothing about the matter until after I had moved to Schenectady.

But the reporters of the capitalist press got wind of the plan, and one day, during Mayor Lunn's absence from Schenectady, the Knickerbocker Press of Albany made the announcement.

It was telegraphed all over the country, and then began the real newspaper exploitation.

By the Socialist press? No, by the capitalist press. The Socialist papers printed the news, and some of them wrote editorials of welcome.

But The Citizen, Mayor Lunn's paper, preserved silence and did not mention my name during all the weeks when the reporters were telephoning and telegraphing and asking for interviews. It was the capitalist press that did the exploiting. Why?

Because ordinary newspapers care anything about socialism? No, of course not; they hate it.

But because I, alas, am a subject for newspaper gossip. We got so tired of denying that I was in Schenectadythat I began to dislike the reporter who first published the "news."

The Socialist papers, it is true, did make a good deal of me after the capitalist papers had "hearalded the fact that I am a Socialist." But all the reporters who came to see me were from ordinary commercial newspapers. No Socialist paper, neither

The Call nor the National Socialist, ever asked me for an article. The editor of The Citizen hinted to Mr. Macy that he would like one, but he was too fine and considerate to ask for it point-blank.

The New York Times did ask me for one. The editor of the Times wrote assuring me that his paper was a valuable medium for reaching the public and he wanted an article from me.

He also telegraphed asking me to send him an account of my plans and to outline my ideas of my duties as a member of the Board of Public Welfare of Schenectady. '

I am glad I did not comply with this request, for some days later the Times made me a social outcast beyond the range of its righteous sympathies. On September 21 there appeared in the Times an editorial called "The Comtemptible Red Flag." I quote two passages from it:

"The flag is free. But it is none the less destestable. It is the symbol of lawlessness and anarchy the world over, and as such is held in contempt by all right-minded persons."

"The bearer of a red flag may not be molested by the police until he commits some act which the red flag justifies. He deserves, however, always to be regarded with suspicion. By carrying the symbol of lawlessness he forfeits all right to respect and sympathy."

I am no worshiper of cloth of any color, but I love the red flag and what it symbolizes to me and other Socialists.

I have a red flag hanging in my study, and if I could I should gladly march with it past the office of the Times and let all the reporters and photographers make the most of the spectacle.

According to the inclusive condemnation of the Times I have forfeited all right to respect and sympathy, and I am to be regarded with suspicion.

Yet the editor of the Times wants me to write him an article! How can he trust me to write for him if I am a suspicious character? I hope you will enjoy as much as I do the bad ethics, bad logic, bad manners that a capitalist editor falls into when he tries to condemn the movement which is aimed at this plutocratic interests.

We are not entitled to sympathy, yet some of us can write articles that will help his paper to make money.

Probably our opinions have the same sort of value to him that he would find in the confession of a famous murderer.

We are not nice, but we are interesting.

I like newspapermen. I have known many, and two or three editors have been among my most intimate friends. Moreover, the newspapers have been of great assistance in the work which we have been trying to do for the blind. It costs them nothing to give their aid to work for the blind and to other superficial charities.

But socialism — ah, that is a different matter!

That goes to the root of all poverty and all charity.

When my letter to Comrade Fred Warren was published in the Appeal to Reason, a friend of mine who writes a special department for the Boston Transcript made an article about it and the editor-in-chief cut it out.

The Brooklyn Eagle says, apropos of me, and socialism, that Helen Keller's "mistakes spring out of the manifest limitations of her development." Some years ago I met a gentleman who was introduced to me as Mr. McKelway, editor of the Brooklyn Eagle. It was after a meeting that we had in New York in behalf of the blind.

At that time the compliments he paid me were so generous that I blush to remember them.

But now that I have come out for socialism he reminds me and the public that I am blind and deaf and especially liable to error. I must have shrunk in intelligence during the years since I met him. Surely it is his turn to blush.

It may be that deafness and blindness incline one toward socialism. Marx was probably stone deaf and William Morris was blind. Morris painted his pictures by the sense of touch and designed wall paper by the sense of smell.

Oh, ridiculous Brooklyn Eagle! What an ungallant bird it is! Socially blind and deaf, it defends an intolerable system, a system that is the cause of much of the physical blindness and deafness which we are trying to prevent.

The Eagle is willing to help us prevent misery provided, always provided, that we do not attack the industrial tyranny which supports it and stops its ears and clouds its vision.

The Eagle and I are at war. I hate the system which it represents, apologizes for and upholds. When it fights back, let it fight fair.

Let it attack my ideas and oppose the aims and arguments of Socialism.

It is not fair fighting or good argument to remind me and others that i cannot see or hear. I can read. I can read all the socialist books I have time for in English, German and French.

If the editor of the Brooklyn Eagle should read some of them, he might be a wiser man and make a better newspaper.

If I ever contribute to the Socialist movement the book that I sometimes dream of, I know what I shall name it: Industrial Blindness and Social Deafness.

Another Thanksgiving- more mythological fun

Today, Thanksgiving is seen by many as a "politically incorrect" holiday. The pilgrim forefathers took advantage of the Indians. And some people believe that it is barbaric to plan a holiday over killing a turkey. Still there are my relatives and I probably won't tell them how bad their holiday is, at least not until after we all eat. So I print this so all may know the truth.
There was a “first Thanksgiving” dinner, but not likely turkey or the fixings we see today. The original meat was fish and deer.  The turkey became part of Thanksgiving about 1857. It is supposed to be of foods native to the New World. It became a national holiday in 1941. The traditional fixings came from a women’s magazine in the 1950s.
For a look at the real first Thanksgiving see the Kasama Project. For the Kasama Project:

"Every schoolchild in the U.S. has been taught that the Pilgrims of the Plymouth Colony invited the local Indians to a major harvest feast after surviving their first bitter year in New England. But the real history of Thanksgiving is a story of the murder of indigenous people and the theft of their land by European colonialists–and of the ruthless ways of capitalism."

However, many of us will go to a holiday feast with the intention of celebrating time with our families and/or friends. We are thankful in life for some things. Most of us have either accomplished something of success in our lives or we may like our relatives—spouses—or our friends and lovers. Since I’m an Epicurean and don’t believe in praying to god, I will simply be thankful. I also won’t dump a guilt trip on my relatives for the sins of their ancestors or the fact that they are eating a murdered animal.

NO PEACE IN OUR TIME— or PEACE ON EARTH GOOD…LUCK WITH THAT

Peace…
A word we seldom heard much anymore. Peace has become a forbidden word in politics. Imagine if a politician championed peace in the Middle East such actions would run the risk of one becoming a social pariah. The word peace is primarily termed as ‘The Peace Process’ In political, military and diplomatic arenas but the language of peace is bereft of meaning, implementation and mention…even in religious speak.
Has it been this way so long that now there is no chance of peace as we are more emboldened to join our enemy in their goal of total annihilation? We have turned the War on Terror into a One-upmanship contest of war atrocities and ‘justifiable’ moral depravity which is the absolute opposite of, and the reason for, Jesus’ message of ‘turn the other cheek’. This is well exemplified in our current situation in that we are living and dying the very results of not heeding those words and we are on a path that has a goal that I fear more than our enemy. I am not saying that an attempt at a peaceful solution would have been successful but not having ever tried is why there is no chance for peace now….And I am saying we should have NEVER gone there and we should GET OUT (maybe leave the war criminals that are responsible tied up & barefoot in the middle of the crISIS spot; not to mention the reason behind all the terror in Palestine  & Israel but I just mentioned it.

What a dishonor to that we reproach the people who speak the words: Blessed are the Peacemakers…

Efforts to recall County Commissioner Ranzau continue despite DA attempts to block them

The recall effort to get rid of Sedgwick County Commissioner Richard Ranzau continues despite efforts by a Sedgwick County District Attorney, Marc Bennet to block a petition filed, by the Committee to Recall Richard Ranzau.

According to KAKE News:

“Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett has blocked a recall effort against a county commissioner who has refused to accept millions of dollars in grants for local health programs.”

KAKE also reported that Bennet said that the remedy prescribed by law when someone disagrees with an elected official is the ballot box.

So what Bennett is saying is that once one of these right wing scum bags weasels his or her way into office, there isn’t Jack Squat we can do about it. Bennett is likely a Republican with the same narrow-minded ideas that Ranzau has. There is little doubt that Bennett is just trying to make sure a fellow Republican can stay in office without being accountable to his constituents. His actions are just plain-old-stall tactics design to keep Ranzau in office against the will of local people.
Giving away tax payer’s money, when it is clearly needed by the citizens of this area, is an unthinkable action and it shows deep disrespect to the neediest people in this county.
Ranzau told KAKE;the DA's decision is a victory for taxpaying American citizens and legal immigrants.

His use of the term “legal immigrants” shows that he is a bigot who believes in punishing young children for illegal acts they are not responsible for. It also shows how biased he is against Latinos. He recently and rudely refused an interview with KWCH reporter, Beatriz Parres, who is bilingual and a legal immigrant from Spain. The attempted interview was recorded by KWCH TV.
The people are being denied what is rightfully theirs and he needs to be held accountable.
It is our democratic right to get rid of any politician who we feel has acted against the people’s interests.

Here is information to the last the Committee to Recall Richard Ranzau meeting:

Nov 25 at 10:58 PM
On Wednesday, November 25, 2015, the Committee to Recall Richard Ranzau resolved to not allow DA Bennett to substitute his flawed opinion for the will of Sedgwick County Voters who want to see Commissioner Ranzau removed from office. We resolved to not allow him to block a constitutional and fundamental right of the Electors to determine Ranzau’s continued employment at the ballot box. Eveleigh v. Conness, 261 Kan. 970, 977 (1997). SeeKan. Const., Art. 4, § 3.

While we disagree with the DA’s legal opinion dated November 23, the Committee has resolved to file a new Recall Petition, providing different grounds to Recall Commissioner Ranzau. The new filing date will be announced by the end of next week.  The Committee also resolved to file a Mandamus Action with the Kansas Supreme Court should District Attorney Marc Bennett improperly block our efforts again. Mandamus is the proper remedy where the essential purpose is to obtain an authoritative interpretation of the law for the guidance of public officials in their administration of the public business, or to compel a public official to act. An authoritative interpretation of the DA’s limited role in the recall process, as well as the public health duties imposed by law on County Commissioners would be of significant statewide interest. The Kansas Supreme Court has often exercised its original jurisdiction in mandamus to provide speedy adjudication of issues of law affecting public officials. Recall Petitions in particular are a fundamental and constitutional right of registered voters, therefore the issues that our Petition raises should be of sufficient public concern for the Kansas Supreme Court to entertain if DA Bennett blocks our efforts again.

It is not the role of the District Attorney to decide if the recall allegation is true or untrue. And for District Attorney Bennett to split hairs on a distinction between powers and duties to block a constitutional and fundamental right recall petition seems highly irregular, particularly if the duty to contract for the protection and promotion of public health already exists, and is recognized as one of the duties of a County Commission which doubles as the sitting local Board of Health. It is pursuant to its power and duty to contract for the protection and promotion of public health and welfare that the Commission, through the local health department, meets its ongoing legal obligations under KSA 65-201. Bennett’s opinion that county commissioners have “no legal duty” to contract for the protection and promotion of the public health and welfare not only defies logic, it is inconsistent with KSA 19-212 which clearly empowers the Commission to perform the corresponding duties enumerated in that provision. The DA’s ruling is also inconsistent with a Kansas Supreme Court case cited in his decision, i.e. “if the petition contains sufficient information concerning the alleged violation …, the electors become the decision-makers and may decide for themselves the truth or falsity of the allegations contained in the recall petition. While we might prefer more specific information in the petition in question … it contains sufficient information concerning the alleged misconduct.”  Unger v. Horn, 240 Kan. 740, 743 (1987).

The law is clearly on our side, and we will not be deterred by the District Attorney. This Recall Action will continue even if it drags on till the November 2016 elections!

Sustainability Needs Wichita- a middle sized city- the Peace & Social Justice Center Annual Meeting

Wichita has its place in the struggle for becoming a sustainable community in the US, according to Dr. Russell Arden Fox, the speaker at the Peace & Social Justice Center Annual Dinner & Meeting this last Friday night. Fox spoke to more than 60 people at the event, which included a vegetarian dinner and a business meeting.
"Sustainability needs places in the middle," Fox said. "As you see of New York City we are not them. We are in the middle."
The basic theme of Fox's speech was that Wichita, as a middle sized city, gives it some advantages over both small towns and mega cities such as New York.
"If you ask people how they see Wichita they like to tell you it is like a small town," Fox said. "But it is a large city of about 400,000 in the city limits."
Fox also said there are a lot of small farms that can produce food locally. He said that the local production of food here contribute to a more sustainable economy. New York and larger cities don't have the advantage of small farm production and most agriculture is too far away from the urban centers to be as accessible as they are in Wichitaand similar sized cities.
He pointed out that we have farmers markets and people can get directly involved in the local food economy. He said there is a huge amount of urban farming in and around Wichita.
Fox discussed the negative views people have of Wichita here. They see the town as conservative, and place were people avoid risks. He added there is a fear of change here. He also noted that people want the advantages the bigger cities can provide that we can't get here.
"Why doesn't Beyoncé play here," Fox said, as an example of such disadvantages.
Other issues he brought up were the attempts by people to move away to the suburbs to create nature and space for them to live in, but the homes are too expensive for most people and the distance people move to avoid the urban environment puts a strain on city services.
During the meeting, Peace & Social Justice Center President Pat Cameron listed some of the major accomplishments of the center this year. They include;

  • Actions taken against gun violence. This includes efforts to stop the Republican efforts to liberalize gun laws. The center has had a group of people trying to push for restrictions on the sales and use of guns in Kansas
  • Programs to highlight the struggles of the Palestinian people. This has included discussions, films and speakers.
  • Taking part in protesting the US Army School of the Americas, in FortBenning, near Columbus, Georgia. This school has been a training ground for Latin American military suppression against popular political movements in that part of the world. The school is known by some of us as "the School of Assassins."
  • The center has been involved in efforts to stop the privatization of Wichita's water system. Kansas Politicians have pushed for privatization of many of the state's services. The results have not been good and they tend to strip citizens of their control over our public programs and utilities. An example is KanCare, the privatization of Kansas Medicaid. The three private insurance companies that administer the Kansas Medicaid program under KanCare lost $72.6 million in the first half of 2014, after losing $110 million in 2013.

The holiday season begins and so does the “war against Christmas”

$

By SJ Otto

It is December and that means the Christmas season has begun. People do a lot of shopping to buy gifts for friends or family. They put up neat decorations and we start to hear Christmas music everywhere.

I like this festive season but I’m not a Christian, I am an Epicurean.[1] Instead of celebrating a Christian holiday I celebrate the Winter Solstice—the shortest day and longest night of the year. The symbols and traditions are about the same. But I celebrate nature rather than a religious deity.

There are more people as me that celebrate this season according to their own religions or traditions today than in years past. Some time ago people began trying to include Chanukah in the holiday season. In some cities, such as New York, there are a lot of Jews. There are menorahs in public places and many people say “happy Chanukah.” It makes economic sense that stores sell Chanukah cards and other things related to the Jewish holiday. It means stores making more money and more people feeling included in the traditional holiday season.

Another holiday trend is for “new age” pagans to celebrate their traditional holidays. That includes Samhain, Yule and Winter Solstice. Many of our modern holidays come from pagan celebrations. Most of our Halloween symbols come from pagan religions and the holiday Samhain. Most of our Christmas symbols, such as Christmas Trees and Santa Clause have their roots in these older religions, once called Yule or Winter Solstice. The date for Christmas was originally set for the winter solstice or earlier holidays held around the solstice.

Several years ago I studied Druidry along with a lot of other kinds of pagan religions. After a few years I decided to go back to a more humanist approach to spirituality and I adapted the doctrines of Epicurus.

All of this has led to some Christian conservatives to believe that non-Christians are out to destroy their public holiday displays—and destroy Christian holidays altogether.

Much of this war started with people saying “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” For years now conservative Christian pundits have complained about perceived attacks on Christmas and the Christian celebration of it. For example, this year some Christians have attacked Starbucks for having holiday cups that are not Christianly Christian enough.

According to Nat Parry, of Consortiumnews.com;

“This year, we have an early taste of the asinine arguments to come with a contrived controversy over the choice that Starbucks has made for its holiday-themed coffee cup. Eschewing its typical designs incorporating iconic wintry images of reindeer and snowmen, the 2015 cup goes for a minimalist approach of a plain bright red design with the green Starbucks logo in the center.

With no pictures of Baby Jesus or even snowflakes, the red and green cup evidently is not “Christmassy” enough for some Christians, many of whom have taken to the Internet to vent their outrage. In a viral Facebook post that has received more than 10 million views, Joshua Feuerstein fumed: “Starbucks REMOVED CHRISTMAS from their cups becausethey hate Jesus.”

It seems like a real stretch to claim that plain red cups somehow show contempt for Jesus Christ. The “war on Christmas” folks seem very touchy and jump to conclusions easily.

However there are people and groups trying to promote atheism and that has led some Christian warriors such as Chris Long, to go on the war path. Long is the president of Ohio Christian Alliance, a so called "educational organization," He said:

"The war on Christmas is underway once again this year as the American Atheists have launched a multi-city billboard campaign attacking Christmas and religious faith. Atheist legal groups such as the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the ACLU, and People for the American Way believe it is open season to attack public expression of faith with their relentless lawsuits and letter campaigns of intimidation to city officials, school districts and public institutions. Continuing the tradition of their predecessors in earlier decades starting in the '60s, they won't rest until every expression of religious content is wiped from the public square, whether it's a football team that prays before the game, a city council that seeks divine guidance, or a Ten Commandments marker on public property. Even peaceful nativity scenes are targeted. Their motivation? It is not tolerance, but intolerance of those who hold a religious belief that is contrary to their atheist views."

Wow...is this guy ever repressed?! He sounds as if the country is crawling with atheists trying to destroy his faith in God. This guy is clearly at war with non-believers:

"With each case they win, either by capitulation or in the courts, a little bit of the American way of life dies with it. Ronald Reagan stated, "The frustrating thing is that those who are attacking religion claim they are doing it in the name of tolerance...Question: Isn't the real truth that they are intolerant of religion?"

Some of the response of Christian warriors and pundits to the atheist bill boards is insulting to those whose beliefs do not rely on the existence of a god or gods.

For example, two years ago I saw an article in the Huffington Post where the president of a Kentucky Creationist Museum told Fox News that Christmas was a time to take on the atheists who used their free speech rights to doubt the existence of God;

“Well, it wouldn’t be Christmas without someone complaining about Christ, Fox& Friends host Elisabeth Hasselbeck told Creation Museum President Ken Ham, noting that atheists had put up a billboard in Time Square which suggested that Christ was not needed during Christmas.

“You know, the atheist who are a very small minority in the population have been trying to impose their religion of atheism on the culture now for quite a while,”Ham explained.“You know, getting Bible, prayer out of schools. Christian symbols out of public places.”

And the most insulting statement from this person was;

“I mean, what’s the atheists’ message? There is no God? When you die that’s the end of you? So everything’s just meaningless and hopelessness?”

Why is it that if we don’t believe in god and a religion that focuses on god being more important than anything else we are “meaningless and hopeless?”

This year, as in years past, I am not out to tear down someone else’s beliefs, (which seems to be the aim of some Christian warriors). I simply celebrate my holidays, enjoy the festivities of the season and here at my blogs I like to post thought-provoking and entertaining music clips. Hopefully these musical clips can be enjoyed by non-Christians and people who enjoy festivity without feeling offended.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Christmas At Ground Zero

[1]Epicurus did not deny the existence of god(s) but decided that gods take care of gods and humans need to take care of themselves. He also told people we should learn not to blame everything on gods. ‘If your house is crushed by an earthquake it isn’t the anger of the gods, you built your house in an earthquake prone place.’ Also he didn’t believe in an after-life.
